Farmers learn nursery management, production tech in Beisumpuikam

Dimapur, October 13 (MExN): A one day Training programme on “Nursery management of vegetable crops” and “Advanced production technology of leafy vegetables’ was in Beisumpuikam village, Jalukie on October 12 with participation of 50 farmer. 

It was conducted by the ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project (Vegetable Crops), School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University along with TSP (Tribal Sub Plan) with the aim of  highlighting the farmers on the importance of nursery management, Package of practices and plant protection in vegetable production.

Other objectives were make farmers aware of the importance, benefits and advantage in growing vegetable crops in kitchen garden and also to make them familiar of the common pests and diseases of vegetables and managing the pests and disease with eco-friendly tactics, a press release informed. 

It further indicated that ICAR has identified five aspirational blocks/villages in four districts of Nagaland namely Mon, Longleng, Wokha and Peren for monitoring and promoting vegetable cultivation with the aim of providing services for decent living of the farmers and the training was part of the process. 

The Technical session on “Nursery management of vegetable crops” and “Advanced production technology of leafy vegetables” was delivered by Dr Moakala Changkiri, Scientist, AICRP (VC), Department of Horticulture, SASRD, NU. 

Dr Changkiri  highlighted  the methodology and various ideas on production of vegetable crops with the use of organic sources and encouraged the farmers to adopt the methods on organic production of leafy vegetables which was recommended by the centre after years of trials. 

She demonstrated on the importance of nursery particularly for those high value vegetable crops in order to get better economic returns.

The scientist also explained on the seedling root dip method with the use of biofertilizers/biopesticides inorder to get a better crop. Usages of neem oil effectively  in vegetable garden was also explained. 

The Wrap-up session was conducted by Dr Aastik Jha, Scientist, AICRP-VC, SASRD: NU, where seeds of winter vegetable crops and other agri.

The entire programme was coordinated by Scientist Dr Changkiri and Dr Aastik Jha, Yongkongtula, STA; Huka Sumi and. Ningthing of Enterpreneurs Associates (E.A), Nagaland,  the release added.
