Longkhimon, September 4 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio called upon the Naga people to preserve and promote their rich cultural heritage, while gracing the Mungmung-cum-Mini Hornbill Festival here as the special guest on September 3.
Addressing the gathering at the Local Ground in Longkhimon, Rio emphasised the state government’s continuous efforts in promoting traditional values and culture through events such as the Hornbill Festival, Mini Hornbill Festivals, and various road shows. He highlighted that festivals are not merely for merrymaking, but also a time for reconciliation, unity, and spiritual renewal.
Reflecting on the wisdom of the forefathers, which he described as “savage wisdom rooted in hard work and resilience,” Dr Rio encouraged the gathering to follow traditional practices for a bountiful harvest and sustainable livelihood.
He also touched upon the current status of the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO) and their demand regarding the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT), “urging understanding and dialogue,” stated a DIPR report.
Advisor for IT & Communication, Economics & Statistics, and Evolution, H Sethrongkyu Sangtam, spoke on behalf of the host and highlighted the cultural and unifying significance of the festival.
Short speeches were also delivered by ENPO President A Chingmak and Sumi Hoho President Dr. Vihoto, expressing solidarity and cultural pride.
The festival featured traditional performances by various village troupes, traditional game demonstrations such as fire-making and top-spinning, and a special song performance titled “Oh Mungmung.” Demonstration of log-drum beating, and traditional cotton spinning showcase were also showcased. Earlier, the event commenced with a welcome address by USLP President K Aliba Sangtam, followed by invocation prayer by Dr Longre, Pastor of LTBL.
