Finally a smooth ride on Kohima’s road

The recent repairing of the main road in Kohima needs appreciation from all sections of people who have been complaining for a long time.  I would be failing in my duty if I maintained a stoic silence like a “Kharu” standing sentinel over my beloved town. Prior to this I had a very embarrassing experience of driving some guests in Kohima as it was an exhilarating experience of ups and downs and bumps and silent mutterings over every pothole. I remember a famous Naga National Leader who said that his favourite song was- It’s not an Easy Road and leaving aside the spiritual aspect but on the physical and tangible experience, I would always remember this song back from the 70’s whenever I have to drive through our roads.
The PWD (National Highways) has taken up strengthening and upgradation of NH 61 from 0.00 KM (TCP Gate) to 6.00 KM (IG Stadium).  The Work commenced on 10thOctober, 2011.  While works are carried out between 6 PM to 6 AM, the portion of WMM (Wet Mix Macadam) base laid during the night has to be left for curing for at least 24 hours before priming is done after which it has to be left again for another 24 to 36 hours before laying of the BM (Bituminous Macadam) and SDBC (Semi Dense Bituminous Concrete).  The works up to Peraciezie (High School/Secretariat junction) is likely to take at least up to the end of November, 2011.
This is a normal Periodical renewal work (PR) which is the first for this stretch of road.  It was the Minister Mr.Kaito Aye who really pushed the project through. Initially, the department was hesitant to take it up earlier because of the problems that go with taking up such jobs in the middle of the town. Once sanctioned, it was the EE, Er. Fineson and the SE, Er. Kezha Theiinuo who had closely liaised and monitored the implementation.  The Dist. Administration and the Police have also gone out of their way in terms of traffic management.  Finally, it was the Chief Minister's Office which has been monitoring very closely by calling several meetings of the Dept and the Contractor. One must not forget the hard work and contribution of Temjen Toy a very affable and efficient IAS officer who is always on the move and easily accessible to meet and discuss for any problem.
The works being carried out by Kelhouletuo Chielie or more popularly known as KC Cami and supervised by his son and team of workers need appreciation as they have to work in a very difficult situation as Kohima has only a main thoroughfare while not forgetting the sacrifices of the police and district administration.
A very pertinent observation that I have made is that the current work is one of the best that I have seen being carried out as the thickness and prior preparation done is worth mentioning and admirable. This will be a benchmark for all works to be carried out in Kohima and I hope that it will percolate to all works relating to public utility and convenience in future for our state. The road looks wider as it has gone right to the edge for once and I hope other contractors will follow suit.
I just wish the drains alongside will be properly laid down and repaired so that the roads do not fall into disrepair when the torrential rain soaks Kohima again. As for certain sections, I wish the PHE Department will do its share by laying the pipes in a more organized and tidy manner to compliment the work done and to see that underlying pipes do not seep and damage the roads again.
For once, the contribution of all mentioned (apologies to those inadvertently left out) speaks volumes of what we can do together for public good and it has salvaged our pride and prestige that Nagas mean business and that we are second to none. An afterthought-I hope all the other lanes and by-lanes of the mirror of Nagaland were also spruced up and laid properly so that it can be a model for other towns to follow suit.
