Chakhesang Mission Centre Church (CMCC) at T Chikri Pfütsero was reduced to ashes in a raging fire that broke out in the wee hours of Monday. “It was around 3:00 am, so many people also couldn’t come, but by the time we reached there around 4:00 am, we couldn’t do anything. It just went on burning like that,” Rev Khrotso Mero, Executive Secretary, CBCC told The Morung Express.

As a fast growing town, Pfütsero has seen an increase in population and settlement over the years. In the wake of the unfortunate fire incident, Mero also felt that “this is an eye-opener for all of us. We have to request the government to arrange fire brigade facility in all the sub-divisional centres also.” “It’s not only for Pfütsero, for all the sub-divisional centres across the state,” he added.

The cause of the fire was believed to be short circuit and property worth more than Rs 1 crore including musical instruments like the piano were reportedly damaged in the fire incident. However, no human casualties were reported. “One thing is that the material we used for the ceiling and wall panelling are all pine wood. This is an oily wood, and so easily consumed by fire,” he articulated.

Within half an hour, he said, almost the whole building, the roofing, the panelling, and ceiling were all gone. The ten-year-old church had a seating capacity of around 400 people. They were first alerted by Pfütsero dwellers who saw the fire from a distance. When the staff made it to the venue, it was too late.

Coupled with the problem of water shortage, he said that it was a helpless situation. “We are very sorry about this but God has His own time. He is still alive and we hope and pray that God will supply all our needs to construct a new church building,” he expressed. “We are very sorry for this incident but then we should stand firm and have courage to work for the Lord. We are not discouraged at all,” he affirmed.
