An Amendment Bill to change the nomenclature of ‘The Global Open University’ to ‘International University’ Nagaland was introduced in the 5th Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on August 27.
Nagaland's Higher Education and Tourism Minister moved ‘The Global Open University (Nagaland) (Second Amendment) Bill 2024’ on the floor of the House for consideration and passing.
The new Bill seeks to change the name ‘Global Open’ in the original ‘The Global Open University (Nagaland) Act, 2006’ (Principal Act), as well as the First Amendment in 2011.
The object of the Bill is to amend the first paragraph of the schedule of the Principal Act, substituting ‘The International University Nagaland’ for ‘The Global Open University Nagaland,’ it stated.
The reason for the change in nomenclature is that the University aims to focus on full-time, regular programs and discontinue offering open online courses, it stated.
The Bill is expected to be passed by the Assembly on August 29.
The Global Open University, Nagaland (a State University established by the Government of Nagaland) was established after the NLA passed The Global Open University Act 2006 (Act 3 of 2006) and received the assent of the Governor of Nagaland on August 30, 2006.
It was notified on September 18, 2006, with the publication of provisions of The Global Open University Act 2006 in the Nagaland Official Gazette on the same day.
