After petrol, diesel is gradually inching towards Rs 100-a-litre mark in Nagaland, with continued hike in prices of both fuel in the last two weeks or so.

On October 7, the cost of a litre of diesel was hovering around Rs 97 in three districts, while it was Rs 96 in 4 others.
In Tuensang, where fuels are costliest in Nagaland, diesel was selling for Rs 96.91 per litre on Thursday in the Indian Oil fuel station.

In Kiphire and Noklak, a litre diesel was retailing at Rs 96.88 and 96.84 respectively on the same day as per the IndianOil ONE app.

The four other districts with prices of diesel above Rs 96 a litre on October 7 were  Mon (96.52); Phek (96.20); Satakha, Zunheboto (96.15); and Longleng (96.13).

Diesel was cheapest in Dimapur at Rs 93.90 per litre on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the cost of petrol, which first crossed the Rs 100-a litre mark on June 26 in Tuensang and Kiphire were retailing respectively at Rs 105.11 and Rs 105.03 per litre on October 7.

In Dimapur, the last district to breach the Rs 100 mark on July 15, it was selling for Rs 101.72 on Thursday.

It must be noted here that after rising continuously till July 17 this year, there was a pause in prices revision for a long period till the last week of September. In the intervening period, prices of fuel decreased marginally in Nagaland as per record maintained by The Morung Express based on IndianOil ONE app.

However, the prices have been increasing the last week of September and have been reaching record highs with each upward revision.

Meanwhile, the IANS news agency reported that prices of petrol and diesel rose sharply on Thursday even though global oil showed signs of softening with benchmark Brent crude falling to just over $80 a barrel from previous day high of over $82 a barrel.

Accordingly, across the country as well, petrol and diesel increased between 30-40 paisa per litre but their retail rates varied depending on the level of local taxes in the state.

Diesel prices have now increased on 11 out of the last 14 days while petrol prices have also risen on eight of the previous 10 days taking, it said, adding that fuel is now available at over Rs 100 a litre in several parts of Madhya Pradesh.

As per the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Gas, while the retail prices of fuel are fixed by the oil marketing companies (OMCs) on the basis of 15 days rolling average price of petrol and diesel in the international market while there is also an impact by the rupee dollar exchange rate.

Several others factors determine the final retail prices including central and state taxes including cess, dealer’s commission, and freight charges, and as a result, prices differs across states or regions.
