Dimapur | April 4

Petrol and diesel respectively were retailing at Rs 109.34 and Rs 95.28 a litre in Tuensang on April 4 as fuel prices were hiked by 40 paise a litre each across India. In Nagaland, Fuel prices are highest in Tuensang.

Monday’s hike was the 12th increase in prices since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22, taking the total increase in rates in the last two weeks to Rs 8.40 per litre, PTI news agency reported.

In Dimapur, a litre of petrol increased to Rs 105.77 on Monday from 105.35 the previous day, while diesel increased from Rs 91.72 to Rs 92.12 a litre, informed data available on the Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s (OICL) official IndianOil One App.

The rates on the app pertain to prices in IOCL outlets, and the cost might be costlier in other PSU and private outlets or in unofficial makeshift retail stores across various locations in the State.

However, the prices are yet to reach the record level breached in November 2 last year, before the Union Government announced reduction in Central Excise Duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively on November 4.  It was followed by an additional cut in Value Added Tax by Nagaland Government, bringing down the prices considerably.

Before the cuts, petrol was hovering at record Rs 108.34 per litre in Dimapur, while diesel a retailing at Rs 100.60 a litre on November 3.

However, going by the pace at which prices have surged during the last 12 days, it would not be long before it breaches the record November 2021 level, without intervention by the government.

Fuel rates vary from state to state, depending upon the incidence of local taxation, among others.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha adjourned twice before being adjourned for the day on Monday as Opposition members staged protests over the hike in prices of petroleum products and essential commodities.
