Garbage suffocates govt. school

Every morning, the students and staff of half-Nagarjan Government Higher Secondary School are greeted by a swarm of flies from garbage just outside the school premises.

The flies come from the three garbage dumps within the vicinity of the campus. The residents there have converted the road - a stretch of about 100 meters- leading to the school, into dumping sites. The unhygienic condition of the area has become matter of great concern for the school authority.  Earlier, the school authority had informed the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to take remedial measures but to no avail. Residents continue to throw their waste in the middle of the road. Throughout the day the garbage piles up and the stench increases. Close to the entrance of the school, a dustbin has been constructed but the garbage is strewn outside the bin. The other two dumping areas are right in the middle of the road.

The civic body seriously needs to get rid of the unpleasant site and provide an alternative for the residents to throw their garbage. This would allow the residents as well as school students and staff to function in a healthier environment. The school authority has appealed to the DMC to take measures.
