Geo Park to showcase rock varieties in Nagaland

Kohima, April 16 (MExN): The Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM) Nagaland, Dimapur has added more beauty to its office premises with the inauguration of a Geo Park on April 16.

Director, DGM, S Manen who inaugurated the park stated that the Geo Park was conceptualized with an objective to help the academicians to understand the different types of rocks available in Nagaland. The park would also offer opportunity to the public to see the variety of beautiful rocks found in Nagaland, he maintained.

He thanked the 7-member committee headed by Retired Additional Director, DGM for putting in their best efforts to make the Geo Park a reality, despite meager funds.

Dwelling on the departmental activities, Manen said that it carries out mineral exploration for the future generation of mankind and benefit of the State. Emphasizing on the importance of recharging ground water, Manen informed that the department has been undergoing a lot of research for ground water, ways for enhancing natural recharge of rain water, methods of artificial recharge etc.

Representing the district administration, SDO Civil, Hotolu Sema, congratulated and appreciated department of Geology and Mining for taking up the initiative in showcasing to the visitors the beauty of rocks through the Geo Park. He opined that the example set by DGM shows that government departments are not only restricted to daily normal activities, and was optimistic that other departments would follow suit.

Delivering the key note address, Geologist David Lhoupenyi informed that the Geo Park was an ambitious attempt by the Director DGM with an objective to assemble different types of rocks and minerals from Nagaland.

The park was created using 11 different types of stones including limestone, white and grey, black marble, parepsinai brought in from Wazheho, Phongkhuri, Moke, Mollen, Ziphu, and Satuza. David informed that some more missing rocks including slate would be placed in the Geo Park .An impressive wood fossil trunk has been placed at the entrance of the Geo Park.

President of Baptist Pastors Fellowship DImapur, Nagaland Rev Vitoshe invoked God's blessings while Geologist Imlinungla Walling chaired the inaugural programme. Er Chirhotho Rasutho Joint Director, proposed the vote of thanks.
