Govt launches probe after video of locked school in Yanpha sparks uproar

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 19 (MExN): The Nagaland Directorate of School Education has ordered an investigation following allegations of negligence by the teaching staff at Yanpha Government Middle School in the Ralan area.

The incident, which came to light after a video went viral on social media, shows students stranded outside the school during regular hours on August 16, as the classrooms were locked and no teachers, including the teacher-in-charge, were present.

In a letter addressed to the Sub Divisional Education Officer of Bhandari, the Principal Director of the School Education Department, Thavaseelan K, IAS, directed that a detailed report on the matter be submitted by August 20. The directive stated that disciplinary action would be initiated against the teachers found to be responsible for the incident.

The situation has sparked strong reactions from various student unions and community groups in the region. The Ralan Area Students' Union issued a press release condemning the absenteeism of teachers at the school. “This is not the first or second time, but a persistent issue in all government schools under the Ralan Area,” the union stated, highlighting concerns over insufficient staffing, high dropout rates, and the practice of using proxy teachers. The union has urged the authorities to take immediate action against the teachers and conduct a thorough investigation to address these ongoing issues.

The Lotha Students' Union (LSU) also expressed its outrage over the state of education at Yanpha Government Middle School. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, the LSU accused the teaching staff of "blatant neglect and apathy," leading to a decline in educational standards.

"We cannot remain indifferent to this situation," the union declared, calling for strict disciplinary measures and regular monitoring of the school to prevent further lapses. The LSU also called for a comprehensive overhaul of the education system to rebuild trust within the community.
