Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Yes, Naga society has become too selfish and too ego-centric that we do not care about the common good anymore. Typical examples are the infamous deplorable road condition, windowless govt offices, cow-shed-like govt schools, mutilated billboards, broken streetlights, lack of sanitation facilities in public places, etc in the state. This negative attitude is also creating wider gap between the rich and the poor. The middle class among the Nagas is declining fast because the rich are becoming richer everyday while the poor are becoming pathetically poorer every day.
• Selfishness in naga society will stay as long as we live.
• Unless Nagas are truthful about what is happening in our land and to our people, our society will become more and more selfish. It will think of nothing else but to preserve itself. No individual member of any society can completely preserve itself. Its time we all think of the better good of our people.
• Look what happened a few days back in Assam...two Naga women murdered...where are the right thinking citizens, those big famous associations, federations, movements, unions formed for the welfare and safeguard of the Nagas...is that not selfishness? Or is this a matter for that particular tribe alone to seek justice for the dead? Wake up O Nagas....we talk & blog too much, act little.
• It’s a competitive world…Families are going against families, societies are going against societies and so on…individually there are some without a selfish motive but when it comes to general then “selfishness” rules the Naga society.
• Yes, what do u think the present society is living in..we nagas r not going anywhere else cos of this problem.
• 1. church are divided. 2. to many groups n faction. 3.80% govt official are corrupt. this all shows noboby care noboby.
• Yes, Look at the UGs.
• How can Bureaucrats, political leaders and people at the helm of affair own such big palatial buildings and other properties worth crores and crores from their honest earning.
• Yes our naga society has become way too selfish. The communal feeling which we used to have before doesn’t exist anymore. We have become more individualistic.
• No listening and cooperation with one another.
• Of course. . Some works so selflessly for the common but. .the bulk of the nagas are too selfish satisfying there needs step by step, stage by stage, level 2 level. .and in the end. .they gv a damm 2 all those.
• Yes, the worst lot of selfishness (not everyone though). We only care about 'i, me, mine' factor, no more 'we' and, i believe, this is rooted from our families, our parents and upbringing including education where our only aim is to be the best individually, not as a team. To cite examples here would real lengthy but am sure we're all aware of our selfish nature witnessed everyday...The best way to check this to some extend may rests with parents, schools, churches, society, etc. where 'we' can be inculcated into our younger generations.
• Yes, selfish + selfish = corruption
• Nagas will never get to see the light ... Selfishness will n never go from our society.
• Construction of high walls among the HAVEs is more than enough to explain the matter....
• Pretty obvious. Nagas are notorious for being selfish and selfserving. You see it in the government daily.
• It's the system of governance that needs to change. USSR broke because of the wrong system and ushered in a change. To retain age old Naga values, the bureaucratic system of governance must change. It's a suppression of democratic and individual values. Naga Blog is doing great!
• From the beginning the enemy didn’t like that our faith in Christ was our accss to-real peace, happinss, learning, devlopmnt, richess, succss and honour. So its main targt always use to b to-distrct & possibly to distort our minds & faith with all their coordinatd & systmetic lies, misintprttions and corrupt systems- baiting people wit material riches, pride, prestige, politics of fact destortions, creating hatred misundrstndings & division, n thus harming- rightiousnss, our values, justice, equality, etc,, n lapsing people back to ignoranc, selfishnss, strife, angr, violence, etc. N thus teaching out society little of how to care fr others th th try
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• I will not say that Naga society has become selfish. Nagas have no doubt lost some of our core values and our situation has disintegrated to such a large extent that everyone is just trying to meet basic requirements. Its become a society of survival and it’s the survival of the fittest. I am not saying this is good, but we also need to understand why our society has become like this.
• Selfish is not the root cause. The selfishness we see today all around us is the result of something much more deeper. We Nagas have become too proud, too arrogant and we think the world will go on even without us. We must realize that we cannot survive on our own.
• It is not about being selfish, but it’s the corruption by the high and mighty that is having a trickle-down effect, which is affecting every aspect and section of our society. IF our leaders were generous and honest, this would have a positive effect on the entire population. Just look at a small country like Bhutan, where their Gross Happiness Index tries to focus on honest and happy living.
• Selfishness is a strong word here. Yes, maybe we have become more self-centered, but I don’t think we have reached the point of selfishness yet, though very close on the borderline. Everyone is just trying to survive. Maybe we will all have a better chance to survive if we would all try together by helping each other.
Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• We cannot generalise here! There are still loads of Nagas who most definitely care about the common good...
• Too many Unions, associations, groups..etc be it in Churches, Institution, Tribes, Range, Villages, Clans, colonies etc..etc.. in the name of safeguarding one's welfare and heritage makes the Nagas so selfish and paranoid about others success and achievements...maybe these are also a contributing factors for our selfishness.
• Lack of Quality education both in Schools as well as in Sunday Schools (church) is the main reason for our selfish attitude. Parents, Teachers and Church Leaders are also to be blamed.
• We cannot leave our zone of comfort and confront these social evils and injustice head on because...we are blinded by our economic prosperity/status and as long as these injustice/inequality/tragedies do not affect us or our immediate near and dear ones, we tend to look away and think, there will be 'someone or some organisation' to look into these matters...thank God, I am ok...I am just a man.
