The Hornbill Festival 2019 will feature series of events from December 1 to 10 at The Naga Heritage Village Kisama and parts of Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Mokokchung and Dimapur districts.
Among the many highlights of this festival includes traditional Naga Morungs exhibition and sale of Arts and Crafts, Food Stalls, Flower shows and sales, Cultural Medley – songs and dances, Kohima Night Bazaar, Beauty Contest, Hornbill International Naga wrestling, Indigenous Games, Hornbill Music Festival, Hornbill Marathon, choral contest, etc.
Cultural troupes for Hornbill Festival 2019
The cultural troupes of 17 tribes, consisting 850 will presents cultural songs, dances, indigenous games, rituals throughout the ten day festival at Kisama.
The cultural troupe includes; Angami- Khonoma Village Cultural Troupe, Ao- Dibuia Cultural Club (Jangpetkong), Chakhesang-Kutsapo Village Cultural Troupe, Chang- Chumshu MPS Society (Dancing Club) Waoshu Village, Khiamniungan- New Pangsha Women Dancing Cultural Club, Konyak-Mopong Hongkong Yalam (KNSK-Mopong Unit), Lotha- Lotsu Village Cultural Troupe, Wokha, Phom- Nagaland Cultural Troupe, Pongo Village, Longleng, Pochury-Khumiasü Village Cultural Troupe, Rengma-Tsogin Cultural Troupe, Tseminyu, Sangtam- Tizisa Cultural Troupe, Sanphure Village Kiphire, Sumi- Tichipami Village Cultural Troupe, Yimchungrü- Phuvsi Cultural Troupe, Phuvkiu Village Kiphire, Zeliang : Mount N-Gaulo Cultural Troupe, Peren, Garo- Garo Cultural Troupe, Darogapathar Village, Kachari-Kachari Cultural Troupe, Dimapur and Kuki-Kuki Cultural Troupe, Phaipijang.
Mima stone pulling ceremony
In commemoration to 75 years of Christianity in Mima village, there will be a stone pulling ceremony on December 4.
This monolith will be a symbolism for forgiveness, friendship, and peace to the enmities that the village had with various villages before the coming of the Gospel to the village.
WW II Peace Rally
The Nagaland Adventure & Motor Sports Association (NAMSA) in collaboration with state’s tourism department has been successfully conducting the World War II Peace Rally during the annual Hornbill Festival to commemorate the Battle of Kohima and also to promote peace and unity.
The rally will take place on December 2. There will be prize for most original vehicle, best maintained vehicle, best weaponry, best unformed squad, best ladies squad, best tourism promotion team and more.
This rally has turned out to be a major attraction during the Hornbill Festival and has had many enthusiastic participants over the years with teams coming not only from far off states but also from foreign countries.
The WWII Peace Rally consists of a convoy of WWII vintage military vehicles and participants in WWII era military uniforms. The motor rally traverses through the main town of Kohima to the famous WWII cemetery where a memorial service is observed.
Thereafter, the convoy proceeds to the Naga Heritage Village at Kisama for the flag in and prize distribution ceremony.
Hornbill Badminton Championship
The 2nd edition of Hornbill Badminton Championship will be held from December 1 to 7 at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Officers’ Hill, Kohima.
This 2nd edition would be All- Northeast. This event aim to promote badminton in Nagaland by providing a better and bigger platform to the upcoming young players of the state and to promote sports tourism in the state.
The event will feature men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, 75+ men’s doubles, 85 + men’s doubles, 95+ men’s doubles and 105+ men’s double’s.
Hornbill Kids Carnival
The Hornbill Kids Carnival will be held from December 1 to 10 at Kisama.
Hornbill Kids Carnival was conceptualized by Synergy Group Enterprise (SGE) and its first edition was held during the Hornbill Festival 2009.
SGE decided to organize the annual carnival to create a space for children to have fun, to channelize them by helping them identify their talent, and also make them part of the Hornbill Festival which is billed as the Festival of Festivals.
It is a blend of fun, frolic, exposure along with educative events through various competitions like dancing, singing, painting, essay and extempore.
Apart from the competition, the carnival zone also have food stalls, games, photography, bouncy and disney characters for the children to enjoy.
The International Loinloom festival 2019
The 6th International Loinloom Festival 2019 will be held on December 6 -7 at the Diezephe Handicraft village, Dimapur at the Weavers Place Homestay compound.
It is a grassroot level weaver’s event, where the community, discerning tourists, textile and slow fashion movement enthusiasts from all over India and the world come to salute the Naga women weavers who are keeping this tradition alive.
The whole organic process from cotton cultivation to ginning, to yarn making, dyeing, weaving and finishing will be demonstrated during the festival.
It will have workshops, panel discussions, competition among weavers, folk song and dance performances by the day followed by an optional music concert and bonfire dinner every night.
Hornbill Escapade: Off the road
A event called Hornbill Escapade: Off the road will take place from December 2 to 10.
The Hornbill Escapade is an experiential idea, formed to cater to the ever increasing variety of tourists in our small state during the Hornbill Festival. It aims to satiate the adventurous craving of our guests who come for more than the cultural extravaganza at Kisama. The tour shall be organized for five (5) days at varied locations around the state capital, from December 2- 10.
Interested guests shall be taken to picturesque locations and/or the terrace fields of a selected village around the state capital via agri link roads (Kohima and Phek District), and given an added chance for tourists to experience the actual rural life of the indigenous Nagas on a one day cycle. The highlight shall be a trip on a gypsy with an off-road experience, driven by well experienced, responsible drivers, with an exceptional outgoing personality.
The trips shall enable guests to experience the beauty of solitude in the arms of nature, as well as give them a better understanding of indigenous life by way of interaction with the locals.
The tour also aims to include some strategic locations of the World War II, to commemorate the ongoing 75 years anniversary of the Battle of Kohima.
All the trips shall be on a Maruti Gypsy. This is a litter free tour.
Heritage village walks
The village walks have designed to enable visitors to experience the true essence of Nagaland.
It will take the visitors on a journey to the nearby villages and show them the history, lifestyle and social structure of the villages.
The Village tour will cover tour to Tuophema, Khonoma and Mima villages from December 2 to 10.
Registration can be done at NTA Information Counter Kisama Heritage Village. Tour duration is 9 hours.
Lunch and tea will be provided at the Village.
Naga Kiti Silat
Nagaland Kiti Salat will be presenting Naga Kiti Silat (Nagaland Pencat Silat) on December 8 at Kisama from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.
Pencak Silat is the indigenous martial art/sports of Indonesia. It is associated with Self-Defense, Physical Fitness, Sports, Dance and Acrobatic.
Pencak Silat is a non-aggressive martial arts from the Indonesian/Malay islands. It can be practiced purely for sport and fitness, for the aesthetic beauty of the art or for the chance to learn one of the world’s few remaining complete traditional martial arts systems.
Silat enhances and strengthens self-awareness, self-discipline, integrity, responsibility, loyalty and teamwork amongst its practitioners.
This is an artistic sport, originating from South East Asia. Pencak Silat uses the techniques of the hands, legs and wrestling.
Pencak Silat is divided into two categories: combat and performance. In the combat event, the techniques of self-defense and attack play a decisive role.
In the performance category, besides beautiful shows, Pencak Silat also offers soft, simple exercises for everyone wishing to improve their physical strength.
Hornbill first cut
Hornbill first cut: Inter Collegiate Entrepreneurship Competition with the theme “Out of the Box” will be held from December 1- 8.
This competition is open for all degree students. See money of Rs. 10,000 will be provided for each team.
Winner will get a free education trip.
