Hornbill Festival: Nagaland to introduce 'tourist police' to facilitate visitors

Kohima prepares for the premier annual festival 

  Our Correspondent Kohima | November 5   For the first time, deployment of tourist police is on the cards for maintaining the safety and security of tourists during Hornbill Festival of Nagaland, starting from December 1.   Vekhosa Chakhesang, senior SP Kohima said this during the review meeting of the concerned departments, police and district administration, village councils, youth bodies and stakeholders in regard to preparation for the upcoming Hornbill Festival here today at DC’s Conference Hall.   Five days of training for the tourist police is scheduled in Mid November, to be conducted by the Nagaland Police and the Tourism Department. The SP also sought support of the Assam Rifles, other para military forces and the public.   Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Rajesh Soundararajan informed that separate meetings for security coordination and traffic management would be convened soon. He meanwhile further called for strict implementation of the ‘Plastic Free Zone’ at Kisama, an initiative which came to effect last year.   Regarding the status of roads in and around Kohima, Soundararajan requested the concerned departments to complete maintenance work latest by November 20 and provide continued status updates. He further reiterated that optical fiber cables/wires are to be properly bunched and laid in a tidy way.   Official from the Power Department informed that the department is already working towards providing efficient street lighting and stable power supply during the festival.   Representative from Lead Bank informed that that Mobile ATMs will be taken care at the main venue of the Hornbill Festival Kisama. The official assured to ensure that ATMs are supplied with enough cash during the festival, not only at the main venue but in the capital Kohima on a round to clock basis.   The Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industries meanwhile requested the concerned departments to ensure that sufficient street lights are installed for smooth activities of Night Carnival in Kohima.   The meeting also discussed matters relating to water supply, social work, painting of shops, volunteers etc.
