Medziphema, February 19 (MExN): ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland centre conducted a national workshop cum field day on ‘enhancing the production and productivity of maize and oilseeds in NEH region’ from February 16 to 18. 

During the field day programme and farmers-scientists interaction, Dr D J Rajkhowa, Joint Director of the centre highlighted various research and extension activities of the centre, stated a press release. 

Dr VK Mishra, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam highlighted that India is a deficit in oilseeds production and imports oilseeds to the tune of Rs 80000 crore. He stated that the NEH region could play a big role in achieving self-sufficiency in oilseeds. 

Dr M Sujata, Director, Indian Institute of Oilseed Research (IIOR), Hyderabad emphasised on adoption of location-specific varieties with high yielding potential. Besides, she assured that initiatives on a comprehensive program of oilseed development involving all the stakeholders in the NEH region will be taken up. 

Dr Sujay Rakshit, Director, Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana stated that India produced a record of 32.5 million tonnes of maize in 2020-2021 and informed that various initiatives will be taken up to propagate improved maize production technologies in the region on a mission mode. 

During the programme, 18 comprehensive lectures covering all aspects from seed production to advances in agronomic and plant protection management, post-harvest management and value addition in maize and oilseeds were presented by expert scientists from across the country. 

Earlier, Prof Akali Sema, Dean, SASRD, NU inaugurated the exhibition stalls and encouraged the farmers to be more self-reliant for achieving remunerative and sustainable agriculture. Officials from Agri and allied departments, KVKs, college of VS&AH CAU Jalukie, scientists from NRC Mithun, staff of CIH and around 100 farmers from various districts attended the workshop. 

A total of 30 electric pumps, 50 sprayers, 100 threshing sheets and vermibeds, small tools and implements were also distributed to the farmers.
