PHEK, FEBRUARY 9 (MExN): The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek, under ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, conducted a six-day capacity-building program on sustainable agriculture practices from February 3-8. Sponsored by ICAR-Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (VPKAS), Almora, the program focused on natural resource management, agriculture, horticulture, and value addition to enhance farmers' livelihoods.

The training began with sessions on kiwi fruit cultivation, management, and processing. District Horticulture Officer Senkalemba highlighted post-harvest handling and opportunities in kiwi farming in Nagaland. Manjunath K.S. presented best practices, followed by a hands-on pruning demonstration led by Farm Manager Keniseto Chucha at the KVK farm.

On the second day, Assistant Conservator of Forests Dzuthovito Lcho emphasized agroforestry’s role in biodiversity conservation, while Dr. Hannah K. Asangla, Chief Technical Officer-Agronomy, discussed crop diversification for sustainable agriculture.

Soil health management took center stage on the third day, with Soil Conservation Assistant Viketuno stressing the importance of soil health cards and biota management. Dr. T. Esther Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer-Soil Science, provided insights on organic amendments and soil fertility.

Integrated pest management (IPM) was the focus of the fourth day. Horticulture Officer Kelhouzakie Chielie discussed sanitation and hygiene management in fields, while Dr. Sharanapa C.H., Subject Matter Specialist-Plant Protection, outlined IPM strategies for paddy cultivation.

Water conservation and irrigation techniques were covered on the fifth day. Agriculture Officer Khesi, from SDAO Pfutsero, spoke on rainwater harvesting, while Dr. Venkatesh, Subject Matter Specialist (Agricultural Engineering), highlighted micro-irrigation, solar irrigation, and drone technology. A drone demonstration by engineer Nukusa T. Vadeo showcased its benefits in precision agriculture.

The final day centered on smart agriculture. Agriculture Officer Alemba Jamir introduced eco-friendly mechanization tools suited for hilly regions and demonstrated emerging technologies.

Throughout the week, a farmer-scientist interaction session allowed participants to discuss challenges and share innovative farming practices. The program concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony.
