ICAR Nagaland discusses mitigation of strategies for agri

Dimapur, July 26 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre conducted a webinar on ‘adaptation and mitigation strategies for agriculture under climate variability situation’ on July 23. 

Dr DJ Rajkhowa, Joint Director of ICAR Nagaland Centre in the welcome note highlighted the present climatic condition of Nagaland and scope of agricultural interventions to be undertaken.

Dr SV Ngachan, former director of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam and special guest stressed on the need for skill development of farmers through training and demonstration and also emphasized on adoption of integrated farming systems. For development of agriculture in the state focus should be given on research and extension.

Dr VK Mishra, Director, ICAR RC for NEH region, Umiam Meghalaya, in his keynote address reported 25-30% shortage of rainfall in Nagaland in the current year. This has largely affected paddy cultivation as well as maize and other horticultural crops. He urged the farmers to adopt water harvesting technologies such as Jalkund and conserve moisture by intercropping system.  He also stressed on the importance of future plan of action such as developing strategies and resource conservation technologies to mitigate water stress.

A technical session and farmer-scientist interaction was also organized to address different issues of farmers due to biotic and abiotic stress. A total of 110 different stakeholders across the region participated in the webinar. A discussion session was also held among the officials of ICAR, KVKs and farmers.
