ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, conducted a field day on rice on October 1.
Kohima, October 3 (MExN): The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, conducted a field day on rice on October 1 to showcase the performance of rice breeding lines developed by ICAR Nagaland Centre having early maturing (100 to 120 Days) and drought tolerance traits.
The chief guest, S Yongchang Phom, Additional Director of Agriculture, GON, emphasised on adoption of climate resilient varieties, promotion of sustainable farming practices and collaborative research with involvement of Government agencies and farming communities. Dr H Kalita, HoRC, ICAR Nagaland Centre informed that the experiments and systems are in place at the Centre for release of these varieties, and once released it would allow farmers to utilize rice fallow areas effectively and benefit the farming community immensely.
Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist, Plant Breeding & Genetics, presented the on-going progress on rice varieties development programme. He emphasised the use of early maturing duration rice varieties for timely sowing of rabi season crops and to improve overall farm income and cropping intensity of the state.
Officials from School of Agricultural Science, Medziphema, KVKs, District Agriculture officers from various districts and farmers participated in the event.
The programme concluded with a field visit at centre’s research farm to witnessed the remarkable performance of the rice breeding lines.
