Indian Railways to install Kavach 4.0 system in 10,000 Locomotives

1966 Km route identified under NFR

Maligaon, October 15 (MExN):  The Indian Railways is all set to install Kavach 4.0, an indigenous Automatic Train Protection System, on 10,000 locomotives across its network.

After successful trials recently, the implementation of Kavach 4.0 was carried out on a 108 km stretch between Kota and Sawai Madhopur in the West Central Railway, according to a press release from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR),. It will be followed by installation in “mission mode” across the Indian Railways network in all new projects, the release stated.

Additionally, all locomotives where a lower version of Kavach has been installed will be upgraded to Kavach 4.0, it added. In the NFR jurisdiction, approximately 1966 route kilometre from Malda Town to Dibrugarh have been identified for the implementation of Kavach, the release said.

The Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection System developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with the Indian industry to enhance safety in train operations, it noted.

It is designed to provide protection by preventing trains from passing signals at danger (red) and avoiding collisions by automatically activating the train's braking system if the driver fails to control the train according to speed restrictions, it maintained.

Kavach has been certified for the highest level of Safety Integrity Level (SIL4) by an Independent Safety Assessor and reduces the probability of train collisions in block sections and on running lines at stations through its non-SIL features, it added.
