Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Yes, I think the government is effectively implementing all possible measures in checking illegal immigrants. But because the population is not well educated in the impact of illegal immigrants, the Nagaland govt is handicapped in dealing with it.
• It is the legal authority to carry out the activities yet it should be done with the knowledge of the people.
• Given the difficult situation, I would say the government is competent to deal against illegal immigrants. I would seriously suggest that there should be a special unit to focus on this issue. An immigration special unit should be formed in this matter, because believe me, the problems caused by illegal immigrants will prove to be the most difficult of them lot.
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• No, the concerned department could be doing hard but something more must be done. Because every time I wave my hand for an auto, the miya inside ignores me and zooms off. Are they trying to prove that we nagas cant do without them? Why the pride these days? Legal or illegal, we cant allow any additional crime. We already live in a corrupt land with enough crimes in all unthinkable ways. And I cant digest the boastfulness of these aliens who has links with some gundas who issues them fake-legal papers to boast about. Lets stir up and check them better before they cause more nuisance.
• No, not really. This is not a new issue. Deporting the illegal immigrants will not stop the immoral activities or others. Somehow we could count the head of exit but not the head of entry to our state.
• I am the last person on plant to believe this government has any guts to do anything competently. Look at the disgusting power scenario, traffic, lawless taxation, etc, etc, etc…. And now illegal immigrants. Miyas!! RTI proved beyond doubt govt is impotent and incompetent. Let govt render logistic support to public and people power will do it.
• If they were doing so in this matter, probably I’m not be here in Nagaland.
• No, illegal migrants also come from Nepal and work as ‘kanchas’ in politicians and govt officers home with the assurance that the ‘saap’ will give them a permanent govt job after 1 year.
• No, not only Naga ngos checking miyas, domicile gorkhas should start checking the influx of nepalis of Nepal who get domicile certificate and grab jobs meant for gorkhas.
• Who allows them in in the first place? the government employees only in uniform or otherwise, evil government only breeds corruption. who gets the cheap labor to plough their fields, who wants the illegal immigrants? those who are corrupt only.
• Not competent because we don't have enough manpower and resource to tackle this illegal immigrants. We need to have a separate agency to tackle this menace. the police are not sincere or dedicated to handle this as they are uninformed, untrained and indiscipline and most of all corrupted. a separate agency should be created to handle this at the earliest.
• No, Any political party that wants to stay in power should stay in tune with the rhythm of public sentiments. Trying to impose dynastic or an autocratic rule can backfire.
• No never,,, the government is very good in giving order, instead they had to be in the field..
• Because here political interest above all the public interest. Besides these regional problem is an unavoidable factor.
• Govt know that it is impossible to deport the illegal migrants due to the lengthy govt procedures & more to add, bangladesh has openly declared there is no illegal bangladeshi in india.
• No, they are busy for next elections.
• It’s a BIG NO. The records will proved it. How could they deport the illegal migrants when they need cheap labor of those people to construct their palatial building stole from the public exchequer. I dare the Govt. to counter me.
• Govt. is hopeless. They do nothing except give speeches. I have no faith in them..
• Competent?? they have detected 28 illegal immigrants so far after statehood whereas NGOs are detecting more than 100 illegal immigrants in a month... even if osama bin laden came through the check post of dimapur, he can sneak in by paying 100 bucks to the police.. checking of illegal immigrants should be outsourced to some NGOs or to the respective local community. govt will never be able to implement anything fruitfully..as long as they have unwilling staff and greedy corrupted officers.
• A ‘Big No’! Govt has miserably failed to tackle illegal immigrant problem. If RTI is true, govt has detected only 28 illegal immigrants in 47 years in Nagaland!!! Shame!! Govt will never do it successfully. NGOs and public must go on total drive and govt should help public. Otherwise, this miya Bangladeshis will completely destroy naga social and economic life in future.
• No. what are we waiting for? Its our land, our right, our future we are fighting! Parasites are infesting even the remotest corners of our land, where real nagas still go and see!
• No, anyone or organizations that opposes the public leaders working hard to identify illegal parasites must remember that they are killing their real blood descendants future.
• No, if govt seriously wants to address the various issues plaguing our society then it should pay the NGOs to do this great social service and reward them with the highest award.
• No, the govt is doing little in checking the illegal immigrants problem in Nagaland. First of all it's time to stop giving asylum or allowing immigrants in our state, i don't know how that's done but it should be done, it's high time. Or at least minimise the entry of immigrants into our state. And also there's a big hole in the security at the check gates, some time back i was told of a taxi driver carrying extra ILP with him and distributing it to his passengers (who happened to be illegal) and letting them cross over the gate. Seems the man at the gate didn't look properly at their papers. It would be great to issue digital identity card with their DNA imprinted in it so that they don't make fool of our security system.
• It lacks political will to address the problem.
• No, successive govt has shown clearly that they will never throw away their easiest vote bank even at the cost of ‘asli’ naga’s fuure. We the general public must fight for it. NGOs of Dimapur are doing a great job of weeding out the parasites. Govt has also taken a face saving but positive step of banning issuance of tribe certificates to non nagas.
• No, that’s why people is doing the job.
• No, I doubt and I wonder what kind of strategy this numb govt have in mind. The so called nomadic Bangladeshis have from their shrewd experience learnt how to sneak, immigrate and carry anti-social activities against the civilizations which surround its edges and God forbid that we are not in par with assam. To my mind if this illegal dwellers are not checked, they will evolve from marginal people to breakers of our civilization. Secondly picture the opposites. In USA Mexican immigrants though pose a constraint for the local employers, yet they (Mexican) atleast return back their share of favor for a great nation building. Whereas in Nagaland our laziness to even do a small amount of work is left to the immigrants and this is how our money is drained and this is how we miss the smallest opportunities. So I correctly state that both the govt and we the people are equally responsible for all this mess. Now do you admire whats happening around you is the question we should pose to ourselves??
Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• The govt. must take some serious steps such as proper recording and documentation at check gates & work places, increasing the frequency of police patrols, creating awareness in the society against providing shelter and jobs to illegal immigrants. Govt. should join hands with other north eastern states & nations, to prevent the illegal immigration, as it is a transnational problem. Economic prosperity and employability prospects are the main factors that attract illegal immigrant, which in turn have steal our jobs and dignity. Let’s encourage our people to cooperate in fighting this problem.
• I feel the govt is still doing its best in other districts implementing ILP but for Dimapur district it appears to be a mess. The govt should issue ID cards for all Miyas-be it domestic helpers, kheti-walas, labours, mistry-walas, business walas etc...and conduct verification by the govt with the help of the locals from time to time.
• The public should co-operate with the govt. in checking illegal immigrants.. after all, we bring them in for all kinds of labor works....
• Nagaland govt has potential but not competent because it will not show its sincerity in implementing measures against illegal immigrants in Nagaland. I don’t think this issue is the govt’s priority. Most naga politicians and bureaucrats are interested only in personal gain, not in naga society’s welfare.
• The govt alone cannot effectively deal with this complex issue although the competence for such initiative must necessarily come from it. It needs a multi-pronged approach. In doing so, all key stakeholders must be engaged in. In addition to direct measures like identification, verification, issue of work permit, checks on electoral roll and voter ID, tenancy, marriage and co-habitation and deportation, indirect - albeit long term - approaches by way of creating and generating local human capital and self-sustaining growth engines need serious attention. Broadly it means the govt should invest and/or work in collaboration with the private sector, for instance, by creating facilities for training, in areas that have hitherto been the traditional occupations of illegal immigrants and other non-local migrants. These include construction, automobiles, commuters transport, supply chain market, wholesale, retail and other such services for which we customarily depend on them. So long demand for services - for example, labour - exists and so long our people do not take up such jobs, others, including illegal immigrants, will somehow and naturally occupy that space - a space vacated, neglected or ignored by us. This is a simple dynamic of market economics. On the other hand, when Nagas start to fill in such spaces, it will create increased competition. Gradually over time, their (illegal immigrants) promising land of milk and honey will be less promising, sour and bitter. Naturally, then, they will have to search for greener pastures elsewhere. The major benefit is thus three-fold: a) we find gainful employment, b) flight of capital is considerably arrested which in turn translates into better internal circulation of money and improved economy, and c) the colossal burden of deportation is eased considerably without having to use coercive means. So long we ignore this approach, steps to tackling this problem will remain incomplete and ineffective.
