Today saw the conclusion of a three-day national seminar on ‘Impact of commercialization and communalization of Education in Naga society’ organized by All India Forum for Right to education (AIFRTE) at Patkai Christian College, Seithekiema.
In the technical session, resource persons included Dr. Jano Sekhose, Associate Prof, Department of English, Nagaland University (NU); Dr. Mimi K Ezung, Associate Prof, Department of Tenyidie, NU (report on page 1); and Dr. Catherine Rutsa, Asst. Prof, LPM, SASARD, NU.
Dr. Jano Sekhose, who spoke on the topic ‘Issues regarding RTE in Nagaland,’ highlighted on the RTE which was enforced in Nagaland in 2011. She said non-detention is becoming the face of RTE in Nagaland. This has resulted in high drop-out rate in class 9 and the problem is carried over to class 10 and higher classes, she said.
According to her survey, it was found that there was less enrolment in Government schools, higher number of drop-outs and low pass percentages. Some government schools even showed zero pass percentages. While the private schools showed more enrolment, less drop-outs, pass percentages of 80 plus since 2011.
Speaking on the topic ‘Strengthening rural education through community based livestock,’ Dr. Catherine Rutsa presented her paper based on surveys and data on importance of pig rearing in Naga society and how pigs are considered as the living bank for various households in Nagaland. She highlighted on the socio-economic importance of pigs, the current status of pig population, current meat requirement and its availability in the market.
The valedictory function was chaired by Prof. Madhu Prasad, Member Presidium, AIFRTE. Dr. Vizovol Mekro, Associate Professor, Kohima Science College graced the occasion as the guest of honour. A special guitar ensemble was presented by the B.Music students of Patkai Christian College.
Dr. Vizovol Mekro, in his address, spoke on the active role played by the AIFRTE against the commercialization and communalization of education and also on their stand in RTE. He briefed on his acquaintance with the AIFRTE in 2014 when the NSF organised a seminar along with the AIRFTE. Like the various resource person, he also voiced his concern on the poor results of Government schools, proxy teachers, lack of Maths and Science teachers in Government schools. He presented certain facts and data on the budget allocation for higher education. He also pointed out how college and school education are being commercialised and said that more seminars should be conducted to bring awareness among the Naga people. The function ended with benediction from Husazü Epao, Principal, PCC.
