Jakhama Students’ Union golden jubilee concludes

Nested on the twin foothills within the National Highway 29 passing through it and proximity to the state capital Kohima, Jakhama village is gifted with reputed educational institutions ranging from primary schools to the college.  

The village and its people are also enlivened with streams of fresh water running down from the mountainous region for consumption and irrigation purposes besides the abundance of numerous natural resources.Even communication and transportation facilities are conveniently accessible. “There is no dearth of facilities for the society to grow at par with others in terms of education and economy.”  

This was stated in the golden jubilee souvenir of Jakhama Students’ Union (JSU). JSU attained 50 years of its existence since its inception in 1967. The golden jubilee celebration took place from December 27 to 28 this year under the theme ‘Envisioning a competitive future.’  

As per the Nagaland Economic Survey 2015-16 statistics on government employees, there are 6,731 Class I & Class II employees in Nagaland and based on the list of gazetted officers in Jakhama village prepared by the Jakhama Gazetted Officers Krotho in 2016, there are 95 numbers of gazetted officers, constituting 1.42% of the total number.  

“Our village has an abundance of opportunity and resources to be both producers and consumers. Avenues like agro-based farms, eco-tourism, restaurants and weekly/daily markets knock at our doors. Retail businesses catering to daily needs of the people are feasible because of the presence of a large number of student community and hostel apart from the villagers and employees in the government departments and private sectors. This will facilitate the enhancement of our economy,” stated the concept note of the golden jubilee theme.  

The concept note also stated that Zhokhami has a history of being righteous, loyal, courageous and hardworking, adding “These rich values clubbed with the beautiful culture and tradition have to continue to guide our lives. With a rich and great past, we should not become complacent by living on the yesteryear’s glories. It is time to wake up the slumbering giants in us to ensure a better environment and brighter future for the coming generations.”  

“Let us all unite to strive for excellence through wisdom and to achieve it courageously, so that we can excel in all fields,” the concept note added.    

‘Envisioning a competitive future’

Niketu Iralu, Trustee, Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, New Delhi today unveiled the golden jubilee monolith and later spoke on the jubilee theme ‘Envisioning a competitive future.’ He talked about the rapid increase in population world-wide, which now stands around 7-8 billion. He said there is increasing number of human beings needing to share living space that cannot be increased and resources that are limited.  

On climate change, he expressed concern over the destructive consequences of the degradation of the sensitive eco-system that supports life on planet earth. On socio-economic, political and cultural changes, Iralu shared his view on threatening world peace and growth because of revolutionary changes and breakthrough in science and technology in general and artificial intelligence in particular.  

He stressed on the need to respond to the high challenges that the coming changes in the world that will bring to us which we cannot ignore. “Each one of us have to play our role,” he said and emphasized on the need to find the way and be responsible in their thinking to put the things right.  

He said each Naga must decide to be the role model otherwise our society is going to be unmanageable.  

Also stressing on the need to nurture well a common Naga tree, he said “we should become a people who are happy to care for the health of the tree more than the enjoyment of its future fruit.”    

JSU Educational Trust launched

JSU golden jubilee planning committee convenor Ar. Zavishio Khieya announced the institution of Educational Trust in commemoration of 50 years of JSU. Later it was formally launched by Er. Khiipi Natso, Engineer-in-Chief, NPWD, Kohima. This Educational Trust aim to facilitate the students whose parents found inability to afford their education.   JSU president Kelethuzo Yosa in his presidential address thanked the founders and past leaders who had brought the torch of education and wisdom from the beginning until the present time. He also granted permission for formation of JSU unit, Kuda.  

Later, Er. Khiipi Natso spoke on the topic “50 Years and Beyond” at the closing session. Earlier, hoisting of flags in commemoration of 50 years of JSU was done by Dr. Nolesel Zhotso, chairman Jakhama Village Council on day one while Koko Vizotha, managing director, Fernwood Higher Secondary School spoke on the topic “Education and its impact in the present context.” Golden jubilee souvenir was released by K. Ashi Khieya, additional director general, National Academy of Customs Excise & Narcotics, Shillong.  

Concluding remarks was made by Adv. Kezhokhoto Savi, co-convenor JSU golden jubilee planning committee. Literary competition, installation of new office bearers, jubilee nite also marked the celebration.
