Pungro, August 8 (MExN): The Kiphire District Legal Services Authority ‘revamped’ the Legal Aid Clinic and conducted a legal awareness programme in Pungro town on August 7.
During the event, NSLSA Member Secretary N Longshitung Ezung inaugurated the Legal Aid Clinic and also elaborated on the purpose of legal services, a press release informed on Sunday. He said that the services were made available to make justice accessible to all, adding that the legal services play a very decisive role and acts as a bridge between the needy, poor and the courts. Stating that legal services authorities provide free and competent legal services to all the weaker sections of the society, he also highlighted some schemes of the National Legal Services Authority.
Pungro ADC Abhinav Shivam encouraged the people of Pungro town to come forward and get the benefits of legal rights/services through proper channel. He also acknowledged the District Legal Services Authority for creating the legal awareness programme in the remote areas, the release stated.
As part of the awareness programme, Kiphire APP Micheal Aye spoke on ‘Rights of Arrested Persons,’ and said that an arrest is an act of taking a person into custody as he/she may be suspected of a crime or an offence. It is done because a person is apprehended for doing something wrong. He also mentioned some of the sections like, Section 51(1) CrPC, examination of arrested person by medical practitioner at the request to the arrest person (Section 54), person arrested to be informed of ground of arrest and of right of bail. Whenever the search of a female person is necessary, the search should be made by another female with strict regard to decency and modesty, as per Section 51(2), he added.
A session on ‘Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act’ was delivered by Retainer Lawyer, DLSA Kiphire, Bendangwati Sangtam who highlighted the functions of the Nagaland Village Council Act, powers and duties, power to remove members, limitations of tenure, and duties of village council members, among others.
