The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has announced plans to introduce a labour registration system along with uniforms for workers within the KMC jurisdiction, aiming to ensure job authenticity and improve public service delivery. With approximately 1,000 labourers in Kohima, the initiative will start on December 2, 2024, at the KMC office.
Addressing a press conference today, KMC Vice Chairman Khrielievi Chüsi explained that the registration process is essential to establish legitimacy for workers and enhance the effectiveness of public services in the capital. The registration will also include the issuance of a token number for each registered labourer. Labourers without a token number will face heavy penalties, Chüsi warned.
The KMC also plans to introduce the uniform for registered labourers, which has been scheduled after the Hornbill Festival.
In addition, Chüsi highlighted that the KMC would monitor market rates in Kohima, with inspectors assigned to ensure compliance with the required norms. Action will be taken against those who fail to adhere to these regulations.
On sanitation, the Vice Chairman emphasized the KMC’s commitment to taking strict action against improper waste disposal in the city.
He announced plans to install dustbins at all shops, with the responsibility for maintaining cleanliness falling on the shopkeepers. The KMC has also directed property owners and shopkeepers to keep their surroundings clean and properly dispose of waste.
In accordance with Section 141 of Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, the KMC will impose penalties on defaulters for violations such as improper waste disposal and littering. The penalties are as follows- Improper disposal of waste-Rs 2000, Littering/non-segregation of waste- Rs 1000, Absence of proper waste bin- Rs 500, Unauthorised burning of waste- Rs 5000.
