Landmark’ dialogue in Mekokla focuses on revitalising school education

Wokha, February 15 (MExN): In what was described as a “landmark dialogue,” a consultative meeting was held at Mekokla Village on February 13 to deliberate on strengthening teachers’ commitment and professional ethics.

The dialogue brought together the Mekokla Women Hoho (Eloi Ekhung), village elders and educators.

According to a press release issued by the Eloi Ekhung, the meeting was convened amid concerns that declining academic standards and low enrolment could affect the long-term sustainability of the village school. With the Mekokla Students’ Union (MSU) Platinum Jubilee scheduled for December 2026, the community resolved to prioritise education as central to the village’s progress.

During the deliberations, members emphasised the role of teachers as community role models and underscored the need for punctuality, accountability and sincerity in discharging their duties. Concerns were also raised over the reported absence of a majority of teachers from the meeting despite prior notification.

Headmaster of Government High School, Mekokla, Mhonbemo James Yanthan, welcomed the initiative and called for sustained engagement between the school and the community to foster discipline and improve academic performance.

As a way forward, the meeting resolved to strengthen collaboration between school authorities, teachers and community bodies, and to ensure closer monitoring of academic functioning. The Eloi Ekhung reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and overseeing efforts to enhance education in Mekokla.
