Exposure trips provide opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, allowing students to explore, observe, and understand the world through real-life experiences. One such memorable journey for me was our visit to Doyang, a scenic and ecologically rich region located in Wokha District, Nagaland. While the natural beauty of Doyang was breathtaking, the highlight of our trip was the visit to the Doyang Hydro Electric Project, an important infrastructure that plays a key role in regional development and clean energy generation.
As we approached Doyang, the landscape slowly transformed into a beautiful combination of lush green hills, dense forests, and calm blue waters. The peaceful surroundings were a refreshing contrast to our daily school routine, filling us with excitement and curiosity. Upon arrival, the vast reservoir of the Doyang River immediately caught our attention. Its still waters reflected the sky like a mirror, creating a scene of quiet perfection. This reservoir is central to the functioning of the hydroelectric project, and we were eager to learn how this great system works in harmony with nature.
The Doyang Hydro Electric Project, developed by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), stands as a remarkable achievement for Nagaland. Commissioned in the year 2000, the project has an installed capacity of 75 MW and harnesses the water of the Doyang River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, to generate electricity. The entire system, which includes the dam, power house, and reservoir, not only fulfills the energy requirements of the region but also contributes to ecological balance and economic growth. Seeing such a massive project in a remote area like ours made me realize the importance of infrastructure in building the future of our state and nation.
During our guided tour, the engineers explained to us the fascinating process of hydroelectric power generation. They showed how the water stored in the dam is released to rotate turbines connected to generators, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. They also emphasized that hydroelectric power is a clean and renewable source of energy that does not produce harmful gases. Listening to them made me understand how technology, when used wisely, can protect the environment while supporting development. It was inspiring to see how human effort and nature’s gift of water could together light up homes and industries.
Our learning experience at Doyang went beyond machines and turbines. We were amazed to discover that the same reservoir is also a major stopover site for the migratory Amur Falcons. Every winter, millions of these birds arrive from Siberia and China before continuing their journey to Africa. This extraordinary phenomenon has earned Nagaland the title of the “Amur Falcon Capital of the World.” Watching the clear blue sky filled with flocks of these graceful birds reminded us that nature and human progress can coexist beautifully if cared for with respect and responsibility.
The Doyang River itself is one of Nagaland’s most important rivers. Originating from the Japfü mountain range, it flows through hills and valleys, providing life and livelihood to many villages along its path. The river sustains agriculture, supports fishing, and offers breathtaking scenic views. Surrounded by forests and wildlife, the Doyang River Valley is a haven for nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy fishing, picnicking, or simply resting by the riverside, while adventure seekers can explore the hilly terrain and discover the diverse plants and animals that make the region so special. Experiencing this harmony of nature and human life helped me understand why such places must be preserved for the future.
In conclusion, my exposure trip to Doyang was not just a journey but an eye-opening experience that deepened my understanding of development, environment, and responsibility. Visiting the Doyang Hydro Electric Project helped me realize how essential such projects are for our progress and how important it is to maintain a balance between growth and sustainability. I also learned that the strength of our nation lies in our ability to use our natural resources wisely and responsibly. A nation that respects its environment and invests in renewable energy is one that truly moves forward. Every young citizen must take pride in our land, protect its beauty, and contribute to its progress. I returned home with not only wonderful memories but also a renewed sense of duty toward building a greener, stronger, and more sustainable India.
