There is more to filmmaking, apart from having a good story, idea and performers, ‘budding’ filmmakers were told during a workshop at Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) on November 3.

The workshop was conducted by PCC’s Department of Media and Mass Communication (DMMC) in association with Panasonic and Beth Ezer Studio as a part of the ‘3-Day Campus Festival 2.0’ which started on November 1.

Addressing the workshop, resource person, Sanjib Kr Boro stressed on the importance of technical aspects in making a quality film, apart from having a good story, director, and cast.

Listing out in the order of ‘importance,’ the Lumix Technical Expert for North-East ranked a good content first, followed by the director and director of photography or cinematographer, before the cast.

Boro stated that post production works are critical in making or breaking a film, documentary or any visual presentation.
Thereafter, he took the audience to a journey on basics of filmmaking including the trajectories over the years particularly emphasising on framing in films, shots and sequences. Accordingly, he explained the concept of frames per second for still and video, frame size and other related aspects.

Always shoot in highest quality available and for any filmmaker or photographer, it is important to generate ‘raw’ files, Boro advised. This is needed for post-production works as well as maintaining the quality of films, he added.

Boro further elaborated camera shot framing techniques and explained in details various shots and angles in film such as single, two and three shot; over the shoulder and over the hip; and Point-of-view  (POV) shot.

He also stressed on log profile, or logarithmic profile - a shooting profile, and stated the importance of colour correction during post-production. “Know your camera and create your frames creatively,” Boro added. He also answered queries from the participants and also explained features of some latest Panasonic’ LUMIX cameras as well as things to remember before buying any shooting devices.

Later, the students divided into three groups took part in practical session where they were tasked to make a short feature using the Lumix cameras. Apart from DMMC, students from the PCC’s department of Education, English, Music, Zoology and BCA also participated in the workshop. Members of the Photography Club Dimapur also attended the workshop.

Meanwhile, the DMMC’s 3 -Day Campus Festival held in collaboration with the Film Association of Nagaland powered by Luna’s Season under the theme, ‘Exploring the World of Cinematic Realism’ concluded on Thursday with screening of films and documentaries from North-East.
