Guwahati, July 11 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) today informed that the Union Ministry of Railways has sanctioned and allocated fund for conducting the final location survey for construction of new double lines at certain vital sections under its jurisdiction.

The selected sections for construction of new double lines are Aluabari- Thakurganj covering about 19 kilometre (km); Arariya – Thakruganj – Siliguri, 168 km;  Siliguri Town - Gulma (By pass line), 14 kms;  and New Jalpaiguri – Siliguri, 8 kms.

The rail route from Katihar/Malda Town to Dibrugarh is the main cardinal route of the NFR system and connects the North-East region with the rest of India,  informed an official  press release.

The doubling of the Broad Gauge line of the targeted sections are of high priority importance for NFR, it said.

On completion of the proposed doubling works, there will be four lines connectivity from Katihar to NE States which will help in better mobility of railway traffic to the region with the Northern part of India.

Under ‘Act Northeast Policy’, the Government of India has been investing hugely in the infrastructure sector including agriculture which will bound to increase the traffic load on this route, it maintained.

These sections, once completed with doubling of railway line will be considered as a major alternative connectivity for the zone that will reduce the time, cost and distance of transportation for both man and materials thus giving a major socio- economic boosts to the areas and the entire region, it added.
