Dimapur district accounted for half of settlement amount

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 14 (MExN): A total of 381 cases were disposed of during the State Lok Adalat (people’s court) held across Nagaland on September 14. The total included cases in the pre-litigation stage as well as pending cases.

The claims settled amounted to Rs 4,06,21,512. The figure represented the mutually agreed-upon payments between the disputing parties, based on consensus to settle claims for damages or compensation. The settled amount included payments related to fines, bank loan recoveries, money suits, compensation, and other financial claims.

As per a press release from the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), the total number of cases taken up for resolution  were 1,158. The majority of the disputes involved bank loan recovery, Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases, and other public utility issues, such as telephone and water bill disputes.

The NSLSA informed that the Lok Adalat was conducted by the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, and guided by the NSLSA Executive Chairman, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, Judge of the Gauhati High Court. 

District Judges presided over the settlements. The NSLSA said the primary objective of the people’s court was to resolve disputes at the pre-litigation stage and cases pending in court which eligible for settlement under the Lok Adalat framework through “compromise and amicable means.”

District-wise
Dimapur DLSA: As per the NSLSA, 23 banks, BSNL, and 3 insurance companies participated. One civil case, 134 pre-litigation cases, and 11 pending trial cases were resolved, with a total settlement of Rs 2,23,65,592. 

Mon DLSA: The proceedings were presided over by B Peter Resu, with panel lawyers Angun Konyak, M Moba, and N Mannon serving as conciliators. Fifteen pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up, and eight were settled, with a settlement amount of Rs 24,04,910.

Mokokchung DLSA: Julian Sitlhou, NJS, Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) & Secretary of Mokokchung DLSA, presided over the proceedings, with panel lawyers as conciliators. A total of 55 bank recovery cases were taken up, and 54 settled. The total settlement amount was Rs 26,74,694.

Peren DLSA:  WV Patton, Secretary of Peren DLSA, served as the judicial officer, assisted by Retainer Lawyers Asungbe N Hau and panel lawyers Kidungyi Putland, Enchang Hieka, and Italang Ramlia. Nine pre-litigation cases and one pending civil case were settled, with a total settlement amount of Rs 20,24,000.

Kohima DLSA: Wokono Yhoshii, NJS, CJM & Secretary of the Kohima DLSA, presided, with panel lawyers serving as conciliators. A total of 721 pre-litigation bank recovery and telephone bill cases, along with eight pending bank recovery cases, were taken up. Of these, 42 pre-litigation cases and three pending cases were settled, with a total settlement amount of Rs 30,79,970 against an outstanding amount of Rs 65,81,985.

Longleng DLSA: Kumdilong Kessen, NJS, Secretary of Longleng DLSA, presided over the Lok Adalat. Five bank recovery cases at the pre-litigation stage were taken up, with four cases successfully disposed of. The settlement amount was Rs2,40,774.

Phek DLSA: Neiko Akami, NJS, Chairperson of Phek DLSA, presided over the proceedings, with panel lawyers Sekhotso Rokha and Thomeweu serving as conciliators. A total of 136 pre-litigation bank recovery cases from SBI Phek and NStCB branches in Phek, Pfutsero, and Chozuba were taken up, with 68 cases settled. The total settlement amount was Rs 28,60,847.

Kiphire DLSA: Holika Sukhalu, Secretary of Kiphire DLSA, presided over the event, with Lizi Sangtam serving as panel lawyer and conciliator. Six cases were taken up, of which three were settled, with a total settlement amount of Rs 43,000.

Wokha DLSA: Nino Iralu, NJS, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson of Wokha DLSA, presided over the event, with Renpemo Tungoe, Assistant Public Prosecutor, and C Jacob Kikon, Panel Lawyer, serving as conciliators. A total of 26 pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up, with 25 cases disposed. The total settlement amount was Rs 4,68,800 
Tuensang DLSA: The event was presided over by N Longshithung Ezung, Chairperson of Tuensang DLSA, with Antimangyang Chang, Retainer Lawyer, and Herola, Panel Lawyer, serving as conciliators. A total of 20 bank recovery cases were taken up, with 12 cases being settled. The settlement amount was Rs 17,15,221. 

Zunheboto DLSA: Phuleto Yeptho, NJS, District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson of Zunheboto DLSA, presided over the event, with Easter H Yepthomi and Inolito K Sumi serving as conciliators. A total of 10 pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up, with 8 cases settled. The total settlement amount was Rs 21,98,704.
