Mokokchung, June 14 (MExN): The Mokokchung District Sports Council (MDSC) conducted a mass social work at the Public Ground and its surrounding areas on June 13, with participation from its 12 affiliated sports associations.

The cleanliness drive commenced at 6:30 am, with around 100 volunteers, including 10 representatives from each affiliated association, taking part in the exercise. Participants cleaned various areas around the Public Ground and Multi Sports Complex, clearing overgrown vegetation and collecting waste materials.

The waste was segregated into plastic bottles, glass bottles and other refuse, which were packed separately in disposable bags. In collaboration with the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), two waste collection trucks were deployed to collect and dispose of the accumulated waste.

Following the social work, the MDSC held a brief meeting to discuss measures for strengthening efforts to maintain cleanliness and protect the Public Ground and Multi Sports Complex area.

Members expressed concern over the increasing littering in and around the ground, including the disposal of alcohol bottles and plastic waste. They observed that the Public Ground is the only public sports ground in Mokokchung and stressed that it should be preserved primarily for sporting activities, apart from official state programmes.

The council also recalled the standing order issued by the district administration last year regarding the opening and closing timings of the ground gates, stating that the prescribed timings should be strictly followed and that activities other than sports should not be conducted within the premises beyond the permitted hours.

The MDSC resolved to intensify efforts to maintain the cleanliness and sanctity of the ground and appealed to the public to exercise civic responsibility by keeping the area clean.

The council said the social work marked the beginning of a broader initiative and that further efforts would be undertaken to improve and beautify the surroundings of the Public Ground.
