MDTOA rejects DC’s plea to call off chakka bandh

Mokokchung, November 21 (MExN): The Mokokchung District Truck Owners’ Association (MDTOA) has rejected the district Deputy Commissioner’s appeal to call off its indefinite ‘chakka bandh’ which began on November 21.

A letter to this effect was submitted today to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, who had appealed to postpone the chakkha bandh and requested for more time till November 30, 2017.

The Association reiterated that unless and until the authorities concerned repair/improve the National Highway 702D (Mariani – Mokokchung road), the bandh will continue.   It has restricted movement of commercial trucks and pick-up trucks in Mokokchung district. “The MDTOA will strongly restrict the plying of commercial vehicles along the Mariani-Mokokchung and also Mokokchung-Amguri road,” the letter asserted.

The letter pointed out that the Association had given a memorandum on October 30, 2017 appealing to the DC to look into the plight of the truckers. Since there was no response, the MDTOA had no option but to serve an “Ultimatum” on November 14, 2017, it added.

Further, MDTOA stated it duly acknowledged the letter from the DC’s office on November 17, 2017 asking for ten more days and also the letter from the Executive Engineer, PWD National Highway Division – II Mokokchung saying that the NH-702D is good and “vehicles are plying very well.”

“However, the MDTOA officials, along with representatives of Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem and Pick-Up Trucks Union, Mokokchung, made an on-spot inspection on November 19, 2017 and found that the road is not only pathetic but also dangerous,” the letter said.

“Therefore, the MDTOA regrets our inability to comply with your request for calling off the time, or to give more time to the concerned department,” added the letter appended by MDTOA president, Sangyumongba Ao and general secretary, Imtisumak.
