Mechievilie Yashü has become Nagaland’s first national football referee after clearing All India Football Federation (AIFF) National Exam for Referees 2024.

Earlier, Yashü cleared the AIFF LEVEL 5 Referee fitness and theory exam during the national upgradation exam at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, from April 14 to 17, 2024, and was placed among the candidates from across India who cleared the exam. The overall results were declared on June 16 after completion of all four examinations- fitness, theory, practical and viva.

The Nagaland Football Association (NFA) congratulated Yashü on Sunday for the achievement. “Big Congratulations from the football fraternity of Nagaland. Wishing him great success,” the NFA wrote.

According to the AIFF, over 300 nominations were received from across five zones – north, south, east, west, and northeast. Over 240 nominees were selected for the zonal fitness tests, out of which, 64 referees and 96 assistant referees appeared for the final fitness test and theory exams.

Twenty-four referees (22 male and two female), and 28 assistant referees (21 male and seven female) successfully passed the final process.

The referees and assistant referees (male) who passed the national exam underwent practical assessment at the Swami Vivekananda U20 Men’s National Football Championship.

The overall results were declared after completion of all four examinations- fitness, theory, practical and viva.

AIFF LEVEL 5 Match Officials are eligible to officiate all national-level matches. The referee needs again to be active in their state for 365 days as a LEVEL 6 Referee or assistant referee and they must officiate at least 30 matches in their top level of the state league matches before state nominates them for LEVEL 5 National Exam to be conducted by AIFF. The Referees again need to undergo all the four stages and these all need to be cleared to become LEVEL 5 Referee (Fitness Test - Theory Exam - Viva OC - Practical).
