The state with its rich natural resource of flora and fauna is one of the bio-diversity hotspots in India with its vast potential in judicious utilisation of natural resources, with special mention on medicinal plants, according to the Annual Administrative Report of the department of forests, ecology, environment & wildlife tabled at the recent state assembly session in Kohima.
“Nagas have been living with nature since time immemorial and what it offers in terms of value for usages has been linked to judicious usage of its resources,” the report said adding that the exploration and conservation of its resources in many ways is linked to the exclusive usage and preservation of indigenous knowledge on medicines.
The project is in exploring ways and means of documenting, preserving and storing of viable knowledge on usage of medical plants, the report said, adding the importance has been given to the mode of usage of the parts and method of preservation.
The projects, according to the report, aims at documenting the local knowledge and usages of medicines particularly with reference to its utility, storage of the plants and the parts used in preserved formed specimen.
ACTIVITIES BEING UNDERTAKEN UNDER THE DOCUMENTATION WORK
* Identification, collection and preservation of locally available medicinal plants species.
* Involving of local quacks in collection of indigenous based system of knowledge.
* Particular preference is given to the methods and the parts employed for specific usages.
* A total of 150 species have been documented so far from all the districts which is only a sizable portion of the total information on the subject.
* Emphasis is given to the methodology of preparation of the medicines and the parts used.
