Mokokchung DC cautions against pre-natal gender screening of babies

MOKOKCHUNG, NOVEMBER 30 (MExN): Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Sachin Jaiswal has informed that under Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994, sex selection before and after conception is prohibited and all offences under this Act are cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable.  

Under this Act, any person advertising and performing sex-determination of foetus can be imprisoned up to 3 years with fine up to Rs.10,000 and Cancelation of medical registration up to 5 years. A notice from the DC further stated that any husband/family member abetting sex-selection can be imprisoned up to 3 years with fine up to Rs.50,000.

It asked all citizens to take note of the Act and to inform the district administration of any offences related to the Act. “If the information is found genuine; the informer would be suitably rewarded & the identity of the informer will be kept confidential,” it added.
