Mon, August 28 (MExN): A team of enterprising farmers from all blocks of Mon district led by Boying Konyak, Block Technology Team Member, and K Mhonchumo, Block Technology Manager, ATMA, Mon undertook an intra state skill up-gradation training at Sericulture Training Centre and Farm at Signal Angami, Dimapur and at the Centre of Excellence, Dhansiripar from August 22 to 26.
The main aim of the training, demonstration and field visit was to improve the socioeconomic status of the farmers from the substantial income generated through backyard silkworm rearing and through production of silk yarn, stated a press release from Subenthung Odyuo, Deputy Project Director, ATMA Mon.
The farmers were shown around the sericulture resources facilities at Signal Angami and thereafter training on rearing was given by Vilhousienuo Khro, Assistant Sericulture Officer. Demonstration on spinning and weaving by Hamsola, Demonstrator followed.
In order to further bolster the training, the farmers were taken for farmer to farmer dissemination on cultivation of food plants and also on locally available resources and rearing of Eri and Muga, Eri Grainage by Tolovi, an award winning farmer at Khekhio village. The team also made a visit to Mughlamukh village, where the farmers visited mulberry cluster farm and rearing centres of Sunil et al. The farmers were briefed by Zhipen, Supervisor on the farm and its components.
On the last day, the farmers visited the Dhansiripar Centre of Excellence. The various aspects of silkworm rearing and other facilities were shown to the farmers by V Khro, Mengutuolie, EO, and Mayang, Supervisor. The resource persons trained the farmers on various aspects of silkworm rearing, preparation of seeds, care and management and diseases. The farmers were also shown the process of boiling cocoons, spinning, and weaving. They were apprised of the economics and marketing prospects by Yashimeren, DSO Dimapur.
