More pledges to ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ in Nagaland

Dimapur, June 6 (MExN): World Environment Day on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ was observed by Earth Friendly Generation in collaboration with World Wide Fund (WWF-Pan India), Nagaland Pollution Control Board and Kohima Forest Division, Chiephobozou at Govt Hr Sec School, Chiechama.  

Methalhoulie, Deputy Ranger, Kohima Forest Division Chiephobozou and Kevingulie Kiewhuo, Youth President of Chiephobozou Town spoke on the significance of the day. Vizosu Kikhi, Project Coordinator EFG made a presentation and WED video clips from WWF-Pan India was also shown. Short speech was given by Imtisosang, Principal, GHSS, Chiechama while keynote address was given by Medoneisa Chadi, Chairman EFG. The students also conducted plastic collection followed by tree planting in the campus.  

WildLife Division Dimapur: WildLife Division Dimapur observed World Environment Day in Tsiepama Village at the Council Hall. WildLife Warden, Dimapur K. Caroline Angami IFS in her keynote address to the Tsiepama Community expressed strong desire calling out to come together to combat one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time that is ‘Plastic.’  

Short speeches were delivered by Kikavi (Forest Ranger), Medoviesie (Chairman, TVC), Imnanukshi (Dy. Ranger) and Khriehie (Chairman, TCR). Quiz competitions were also held in between the session where students of Tsiepama Government Middle School participated and were later presented with prize and rewards.  

The programme concluded with a special hands-on training on the use of GPS followed by distribution of seedlings which were planted in and around the school and village premises.  

KVK Phek and GHS Porba: World Environment Day was conducted jointly by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek and Government High School, Porba in the School auditorium. Village Council Chairman and Member, Community Conservation Area, Shekozo Thuluo was the special invitee. Presentation on Health Hazard of Synthetics was delivered by Dr Hannah Krujia, ACTO, KVK Phek. Plantation of plant sapling was also carried out in the campus.  

Kohima Village Students Union: Kohima Village Students Union in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology, Nagaland observed the World Environment Day by distributing eco-friendly, biodegradable trash bags to all shops and government schools in the jurisdiction of Kohima Village.  

Observation Home: Officers and staff of Observation Home, Chumukedima with the Juvenile Justice Board, Dimapur celebrated World Environment Day. The children presented poetry recital, special song and a skit. Susan Lotha, Member JJB spoke on the significance of the day. Janet P Swu, Probation Officer, Observation Home led the members present to a tree planting exercise within the vicinity of the Home followed by an essay and drawing competition. Juvily Kitho, Superintendent, Observation Home gave away the prizes to the winners. Meanwhile, the officers and staff of Special Home, Pherima along with the children also observed World Environment Day by planting saplings in and around their vicinity.  

Phek Town Chakhesang Students’ Union: Phek Town Chakhesang Students’ Union observed World Environment Day with focus on plantation of saplings in around Phek Town. More than 200 trees were planted donated by DFO.  

Tesophenyu Group Students’ Union: Tesophenyu Group Students’ Union celebrated World Environment Day with Dr. Shasinle Seb, Medical Officer Primary Health Centre Tesophenyu as the resource speaker under the theme ‘Nurture Nature for Better Future’ at Tesophenyu community hall. The celebration encompassed four villages where plantation drive was initiated with volunteers from GHS Tesophenyu and Executives of TGSU. An art competition was also held.  

Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project: Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project in collaboration with NEPED celebrated World Environment Day on the theme ‘No to Plastic’ by planting tree saplings in and around the Green Zone Eco Park. The drive was attended by Longsa Students Union and Ungma Students Union from Longsa and Ungma Village and also from Mokokchung Unit.  

CAN Youth: On World Environment Day, Project SPATIAL under CAN Youth in collaboration with Director, Nagaland Zoological Park, Department of Environment Forests & Climate Change and YES BANK organized a drawing competition. It was held at the Project SPATIAL intervene school, Government Middle School Sematila, Government High School Purana Bazaar, Government High School Dhansiripar, Millennial Vision School Burma Camp and Viphuho Foundation School. The drawing competition started with awareness programme on harmful of plastics to human being and environment by CAN Youth team and interaction with YES BANK Staff in all five schools.  

Ungma Baptist Church Youth Ministry: Ungma Baptist Church Youth Ministry celebrated World Environment Day by cleaning the Imkongmeren Sports Complex Mokokchung and its adjacent area. The cleanliness drive was led by Imtitoshi Longkumer, and Youth Director, Ungma Baptist Arogo.  

MITE Kohima: Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE), Kohima observed the World Environment Day under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ The event was organized by the Ecological Club of the College. Principal, Devanand Sinha encouraged all the Student-Teachers to be responsible when using natural resources and plastic materials. Mechie Kapfo and T Abeni Ngullie of 2nd and 4th semester respectively, delivered the significance of the World Environment Day. They also emphasized on boycotting the use of plastic materials.  

Medziphema: World Environment Day was observed at different locations of Medziphema. Medziphema Town Mechü Krotho and Medziphema Trade Union under the aegis of Youth Department, BC’A’MT conducted an awareness programme on ‘Sanitation, Cleanliness and Plastic pollution’ at CYO Hall, Medziphema Town. It was addressed by Akhoto Kuotsu, President, MTMK, and Menovino Krose, Program Coordinator, BC’A’MT. The youth department of BC’A’MT distributed free samples of self-made paper bags to the shopkeepers in order to promote eco-friendly, plastic free bags.   In another programme, GHSS Medziphema observed the day by cleaning the school compound and tree plantation was also carried out. It was jointly organised by the school administration and ADC Office, Medziphema where EAC, Sentilong Ozukum led the cleaning of plastic garbage.  

Meriema Village Students Union: Meriema Village Students Union organized a plantation drive in commemoration of World Environment Day. The drive was held in association with Department of Environment, Forest & Climate (Silviculture Division). The Union worked in collaboration with EF/CC & Ketsekezie Peli.  

LOU/DHEP NEEPCO Ltd: LOU/DHEP NEEPCO Ltd Doyang, Wokha organised World Environment Day in collaboration with the Doyang Hydro Electric Project Management with the theme ‘Protect the Planet Earth, it is only our home.’ Zanthungo N Shitiri, working President LOU/DHEP addressed the participants. A short speech was delivered by P.B. Das HOP, DHEP. RC Murry Senior Manager (E/M) also addressed the gathering before the plantation drive. Some of the participants were Lotha Hoho Doyang, CISF Doyang, 28th Assam rifles, United Baptist Church, Thillong Village Council, St. Thomas Catholic Church, Forest Department and Colony representatives.  

Dzulhami: Dzulhami Community Forest Conservation Committee observed World Environment Day on June 5. It was organized under the aegis of Nagaland Community Conserved Area Forum and supported by FES and NEPED and marked by tree plantation and cleaning of plastics.  

CIHSR: CIHSR Referral hospital staff and students planted trees in campus on World Environment Day. The saplings were donated by Range officer Silviculture Range Dimapur.  

SDIC Niuland: The Sub-District Industries Centre, Niuland observed the World Environment Day at its office, Niuland. K. Francis Hekavi, Functional Manager, SDIC Niuland and Yepeto Aye, President , Niuland Area Students’ Union spoke during the event.  

Noksen: Noksen Bukmut Thangjem Noksen Town under Tuensang District observed World Environment Day by planting trees around Noksen Headquarter.  

Tizu Valley Biodiversity and Livelihood Network: Tizu Valley Biodiversity and Livelihood Network observed World Environmental Day with GEF Satoyama initiatives and TERI at Sukhai, Ghukhuyi and Kivikhu villages. The Biodiversity conservation stakeholders of the three villages planted around 1500 Jacaranda saplings in their respective villages  

NSRLM BMMU Meluri Block: The NSRLM BMMU Meluri Block, observed the World Environment Day with the NSRLM staff and SHGs planting trees contributed by the Forest Department Meluri as well as locally available tree saplings along the highway and village approach roads. Apart from tree plantation drive, the villages under Meluri Block conducted mass social in their respective villages.  

Nagaland Tourism: Officers and staff of Nagaland Tourism participated in planting of trees and cleaning the Heritage Complex at Kisama on World Environment Day. Teachers and students of Class Five & Class six from St. Paul School Phesama Village also joined in clearing the litters and plastic waste in and around Kisama, Naga Heritage Village.  

Shamator: Para Legal Volunteers of Legal Aid Clinic, Shamator together with Shamator Town Students Union organized tree plantation drive to commemorate the World Environment Day and planted a total of 250 saplings around government offices, government educational institutions and G.A guest house under Shamator Town. Phuleshe Yepthomi, ADC Shamator was the special guest.  

14th NAP (IR) Kiphire: To commemorate the World Environment Day, a plantation drive was carried out at the 14th NAP (IR) Battalion Headquarters, Kiphire led by Deputy Commandant Limaonen. A total of two thousand saplings were planted consisting of thirteen different species of trees. Around 200 personnel of the unit participated in the plantation drive.  

78th Battalion of CRPF: The 78th Battalion of CRPF observed World Environment Day at its Zubza Head Quarters. Unit Commandant Surender Singh along with his team of officers, their wives and others planted more than 200 trees in the camp area. Unit Head Quarters plantations were also conducted in the seven sub-units of the Battalion deployed at Kohima, Dimapur.  

ZDLSA: Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority with the Legal Literacy Club Members of Bethany School held an awareness programme with Tovi Yeptho, Retainer Lawyer as a Resource Person, followed by Plantation of Saplings and Cleanliness Drive alongside the Highway connecting to Main town, Zunheboto.  

TDLSA: Tuensang District Legal services Authority organized Painting Competition for classes 6-8 and Essay Competition for classes 9-10 was held on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ at Eklavya Model Residential School. The Students actively participated in the event by performing different activities in a form of Role play, song and speech spreading awareness based on the theme.  

MDLSA: Mokokchung DLSA in collaboration with Trial Hounds Cycling Club and Administration, Mokokchung organized two competitions-creative project out of recycled plastic and “Wastekathon” collecting of waste from a road map within 60minutes, among the five Legal Literacy Clubs.  

DDLSA: Dimapur District Legal Services Authority organized a plantation drive at Central jail and District jail Dimapur led by the Chairman and Secretary of DDLSA with panel lawyers. Longleng District Legal Services Authority organized a plantation drive at the district court vicinity.

WDLSA: Wokha District Legal Services Authority with Legal literacy club member planted around 300 saplings in an around GHSS campus, Wokha. Mon District Legal Services Authority organized awareness programme and plantation drive with students, NGOs, administration at Council Hall Mon Town.  

PDLSA: Peren District Legal Services Authority organized a plantation drive in and around Peren town. Phek District Legal Services Authority also organized a plantation drive in the five schools by the Legal Literacy Clubs.  

ASUD: Ao Students’ Union Dimapur (AKTD) organised a tree plantation drive as a part of its yearlong Golden jubilee celebration on World Environment Day. Vivika A. Sema, Forest Range Officer, addressed the formal function. The tree plantation was done in Naga Cemetery, Inter State Bus Terminus, Dimapur Government College and Senden Reju Dimapur by the respective village unit under AKTD. They will be responsible to take care of the plants they have planted till the trees fully grown in respective places. Cash award also instituted by AKTD Golden Jubilee Planning Committee for the best growers of the plants and the award will be given away during the culmination of the jubilee programme.
