MVYO appeals for official use of traditional names

Kohima, June 14 (MExN): The Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO) has appealed to all government departments, institutions, agencies and the public to use the traditional names "Meriema Village" and "Pfuratsie Junction" in place of the commonly used "Merema/Merima Village" and "High Court Junction."

In a press release, the MVYO stated that the names "Meriema" and "Pfuratsie" originate from the village's traditional heritage and carry significant cultural meaning that reflects the identity and history of the community.

The organisation said it has observed that several government offices, institutions and individuals continue to use "Merema/Merima" and "High Court Junction" in official correspondence, signboards and public communications.

While acknowledging that the High Court serves as a notable landmark, the MVYO maintained that it should not replace the original and traditional name of the place, "Pfuratsie."

Accordingly, the organisation urged all government departments, institutions, public offices and individuals to officially adopt and consistently use "Meriema Village" instead of "Merema" or "Merima Village," and "Pfuratsie Junction, Meriema Village" instead of "High Court Junction, Meriema Village" in all official records, publications, signages and communications.
