Naga conflicts hampering development processes: Torechu

Pungro (Kiphire) | September 9

Parliamentary secretary for CAWD, T Torechu, has reiterated DAN government’s slogan “Development for peace and peace for development” and said that the government was striving for peace and unity among all sections of Naga society – both overground and underground – for maximum development in the state.

Addressing a seminar on “Village development and customary law practices” at Pungro town on Saturday (Sept 8), the parliamentary secretary said conflicts and clashes among underground groups, communities and villages have hampered development processes to a large extent.

While stating that the government’s main thrust of development was in rural areas and backward districts, Torechu however said that as long as intra-village and tribal conflicts exists, the backward districts cannot aspire to catch up with other advanced Naga tribes and districts.

He said the backward districts are getting more developmental funds compared to other forward districts, but due to internal conflicts and lack of peace, government officers cannot give their best in such an environment.

He said village councils, DBs and GBs being the guardians of the common villagers should ensure security and peace in their respective jurisdiction so that government officers can work unhindered for benefit and welfare of the people. Torechu also called upon the people to raise their voices against factional clashes.

He also said that politicians and public leaders should be more action-oriented and adhere to the principle “work more talk less” if they are really concerned for the welfare of their people.

Further, the parliamentary secretary stressed on women empowerment for equitable development and just society.
