Kohima, November 22 (MExN): One-day training on solid waste management under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) jointly organized by Rural Development and SIRD was held at SIRD Conference Hall on November 22.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Additional Director, RD, Thungjamo Odyuo informed that the Governor of Nagaland has notified 33 villages covering 28 blocks for compliance of Solid Waste Management Rules 2016. Towards this, all village council has to prepare action plans as how to manage their waste as envisaged under Rule 13 of Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.
A press release received here stated that Odyuo highlighted the importance of solid waste management and said “improper solid waste management not only creates health hazards to the life of individual but the whole community as well and has far reaching socio-economic and ecological consequences.”
He pointed out that the ministry of environment, forest and climate change, Government of India had notified the Municipal Solid Waste (managing and Handling) Rules in 2000, making it mandatory for municipal authorities to set up waste processing and disposal facilities, identify sanitary landfill sites and improve existing dumpsites. He, however, lamented that the compliance did not happen mainly because of the inability of municipalities to implement waste processing and disposal projects.
For the rural areas, he said although there are no collection systems at present, the inherent practice of source segregation of wet waste for animal feed considerably reduces the problem of waste segregation.
The training covered introduction to solid waste management, overview of various waste management rules and policy, duties and responsibility of village council with regard to waste management followed by resource persons RDO, Celine Thol, RDA, Teisozhavi Tetso and RDO, John Wesley Magh.
