Kohima, July 5 (MExN): The Nagaland women’s football team has secured a spot in the semifinals of the ongoing Women Sentinel’s Cup at Sonitpur, Assam, after defeating Meghalaya 5-0 in their last league match on Friday. The tournament, organized by Assam Rifles, features teams from North Eastern states including Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as a team from the Director General Assam Rifles Women Football Team.
Representing Nagaland at the first Sentinel NorthEast Cup 2024 is the women’s football club “Naga Damsels,” led by state coach Kevilebei Zashumo and manager Viliebeizo Liezietsu. In their decisive Pool B match, Nagaland triumphed over Meghalaya with Neke Konyak scoring a hat-trick, while Chimmushe and Watijungla each added a goal.
Despite a previous 5-1 loss to Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland bounced back with a 6-0 victory against Mizoram in their second match. Finishing as the runner-up in Pool B, Nagaland now advances to the semifinals and is set to face the Pool A winner, the Director General Assam Rifles (DGAR) team, on July 8.
