In its effort to introduce to various stakeholders of the society to be part of opening their doors to people with disability, children of Bumblebee Inclusive School visited the Nagaland Police Headquarters in Kohima on September 12. “The purpose of this visit is not only taking the children out of the school but also to allow children to interact with police personnel stressing on the importance of learning happening in real time,” Kopele V Tepa, Special educator & Headmistress of Bumblebee Inclusive School, Kohima remarked in her speech.
Stating that they constantly work with children with disability, she asserted that “it is very important for them to see and experience what they are actually being taught in the class.” As a community and as a school, she affirmed that “it is our constant endeavour that we also bridge the gap between the society as well as the disabled community.”
“This is also a small step taken to introduce to various stakeholders of the society to be part of opening their doors to people with disability. It is also an effort to allow the children to find their passion and purpose early on in life,” she further noted. Also pointing out that many of the syllabus are being covered in class with their own limited resources, she said that the visit has been so enriching as well as entertaining to see the various drills.
She thanked the Police Department for the experience and for their outmost support while pointing out that it has been a wonderful and enriching experience not only for the children but also for the teachers and adults towards better understanding of the functioning of the Police Department. She also exuded hope that it will continue even in the days to come.
In his address, Additional DGP, Renchamo P Kikon, IPS said, “wherever differently abled children are sent to the same school, they interact with mainstream students, and they are able to appreciate themselves and especially even the mainstream students are able to relate to them and appreciate them.” Observing that there are very few inclusive schools, he congratulated the principal and her team of educators for providing the platform to younger students.
He further stated that interacting with young children has always been one of the mottos of Nagaland Police and expressed happiness in this first of its kind initiative. “Efforts are being made to reach out to the young ones especially the students’ community at large,” he said. He also stated confidence that the exposure and awareness program will go a long way in trying to bridge the gap while adding that “especially for the young ones, learning through visuals or interactions, it stays with them throughout their lifetime.”
The children were shown glimpses of the activities of Nagaland Police through a slide show of videos as well as demonstration of “Guard of Honour” and demonstration by personnel from DEF, NAP, IRB, Traffic, Tourist Police and Dog Squad respectively. There was also handing over of toffees/gift to the students by the ADGP and a PHQ tour. Earlier, Joy Thusi Fithu, NPS, SP (MOD) chaired the programme.
Mention may be made here that Bumblebee Inclusive Pre School was founded in the year 2012 to provide children with a holistic development programme under the motto, “Igniting Young Minds.” With ‘inclusion’ an integral part of its learning, the school is equipped in handling children with learning difficulties, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Mild/moderate MR, autism, Asperger’s syndrome and is opened to having children with special needs.
