Dimapur | October 8
A businessperson was injured in a suspected extortion related assault in Dimapur on October 8. The incident occurred in the afternoon at a shop located in Burma Camp, NH 29.
The victim was reportedly assaulted for not fulfilling a monetary demand. According to the police, he was accosted by two unidentified men at the shop.
The assailants forced him to hand over money as demanded and he was hit on the face by a pistol butt in the ensuing scuffle.
The assailants also unsuccessfully tried to take money from the cash box before fleeing on a motorcycle, the police said.
The victim sustained a gash on the forehead but his condition was said to be stable.
Another version of the incident stated that the assailants were reportedly incensed over the shopkeeper not obliging to an earlier demand. They had reportedly sent him a verbal message to contact them.
He was however said to have been unaware of the message, which was interpreted as defiance by the assailants.
