The Nagaland State Cabinet has given the Special Investigation Team (SIT) a month’s time to complete the investigation into the firing incidents in Oting-Tiru village area under Mon district on December 4 and the subsequent incidents at Mon Town.

Informing this to media persons, Nagaland’s Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Neiba Kronu said that the Cabinet held an emergency meeting here on Tuesday to deliberate on the issue.

Cabinet was briefed on the action taken by the government including setting up of Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an IGP and consisting of four other members, grant of ex-gratia to the next of kin of each of the deceased by the State Government and Government of India.

The state cabinet has also decided to write to Government of India for the immediate repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) 1958 from the State, Kronu added.

It was also decided that the Cabinet would support the demands made by the Konyak Union to the President of India.

Higher Education and Tribal Affairs Minister Temjen Imna Along was also present at the press conference.

Hornbill Festival 2021 called off
Kronu also stated that a decision to call off the remaining activities of the ongoing Hornbill Festival was taken during the cabinet meeting.

The decision was taken in view of the mourning period announced for the deceased, and the demand of various civil societies to not hold the activities, he said.

He said entrepreneurial activities would continue at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, the venue of the festival, and requested the people to support the entrepreneurs.

The State Tourism Department has been directed to hold a simple and solemn closing ceremony for the Hornbill Festival, he added.

Earlier, Commissioner & Secretary for Tourism I Kitto Zhimomi hoped that the cancellation of the festival because of the unfortunate firing incident would not discourage the tourists to come and visit Nagaland again. He requested  the tourists to empathize with the people of Nagaland.
