Nagaland: ‘Child abuse has long term ramifications on mental & physical health’

Dimapur, August 21 (MExN): Founder of North East Social Welfare NGO based in Guwahati Priyo Nongthombam has said that ramifications of child abuse extends beyond immediate harm which influences long-term outcomes such as mental health issues, difficulties in forming healthy relationships and obstacles in achieving personal and professional success. 

He was speaking during the fifth day of 5th National Social Work Week, 2024 organised by the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with the National Professional Social Workers in India, stated a press release from NEISSR. 

Nongthombam was speaking on “Child Abuse, Health, and Wellness” and delved on multifaceted issue of child abuse, outlining its various forms including physical, mental, emotional, and sexual. 

He provided an analysis of how each type of abuse can severely impact a child’s development, affecting their emotional stability, cognitive growth, and overall well-being. He highlighted discussion examples and case studies that underscores the pervasive nature of abuse and its far-reaching consequences.

Nongthombam stressed that the ramifications of child abuse extend beyond immediate harm, influencing long-term outcomes such as mental health issues, difficulties in forming healthy relationships, and obstacles in achieving personal and professional success. He emphasized that understanding these impacts is crucial for effectively addressing and mitigating the effects of abuse.

The speaker called urgent need for community involvement in protecting children and urged attendees to adopt the role of good Samaritans by actively engaging in efforts to prevent abuse and support affected children. 

He called for a collective responsibility among community members to recognize the signs of abuse, intervene appropriately, and advocate for those who cannot protect themselves.

Nongthombam also spoke on the essential role of social workers in this context. 

He elaborated on how social workers are on the front lines of combating child abuse, providing critical support to victims and their families, and working towards creating safer environments.

The speaker called for increased support and resources for social workers, stressing that their efforts are integral to fostering child health and wellness.

Dr Fr CP Anto, Principal NEISSR, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the importance of quality education and the strength that comes from confidence. He emphasized that these qualities are integral to NEISSR’s mission and its commitment to social work education.
