Kohima, June 20 (MExN): The State Foundation Day of West Bengal was celebrated at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on Saturday, with Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav highlighting the eastern state's significant contributions to India's history, culture and nation-building.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said West Bengal occupies a unique and distinguished place in the country's history as a cradle of intellectual thought, cultural renaissance, literature, art, science and social reform. He noted that the state has produced several eminent leaders, thinkers and visionaries who made invaluable contributions to the making of modern India.
Recalling West Bengal's role in the freedom movement and nation-building, Yadav said the state was home to some of the country's greatest patriots and intellectuals who helped shape the nation's consciousness.
He paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, whose literary works continue to inspire generations and who composed India's National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The Governor also remembered Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, whose composition Vande Mataram inspired freedom fighters during the independence movement.
Yadav further acknowledged the contributions of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee and highlighted the enduring influence of spiritual leaders Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda, whose teachings on service, harmony and human dignity continue to inspire millions.
He said the people of West Bengal played a pivotal role in India's struggle for independence, particularly during the Swadeshi Movement and other campaigns against colonial rule, adding that their sacrifices remain a lasting source of national pride.
Highlighting the state's rich cultural heritage, the Governor said West Bengal's vibrant traditions, literary excellence and artistic achievements have significantly enriched India's cultural landscape, while the creativity, warmth and progressive outlook of its people continue to inspire generations.
He also underscored the importance of State Foundation Day celebrations in strengthening national unity and fostering greater understanding among diverse communities, observing that India's strength lies in its rich diversity of cultures, languages and traditions.
Stating that the people of Nagaland and West Bengal share a common commitment to peace, progress and development, Yadav said such celebrations strengthen bonds of friendship and cooperation among states and contribute towards building a stronger and more united India.
The Governor conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to the people of West Bengal for continued peace, prosperity and progress.
Earlier, the programme featured a video message from the Governor of West Bengal, speeches by Kamala Kant Paul, President of Bengali Samaj, Dimapur, and Sudipta Kumar, President of Bengali Samaj, Kohima.
Cultural performances, including Rabindra Nritya and Bengali folk dances presented by students of BBR Academy and local artists, showcased the rich cultural heritage of West Bengal.
