There are 17 ‘black spots’ in Nagaland according to a ‘Road Accidents in India 2019’ report published by the Transport Research Wing of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Most of the accident prone spots were on National Highway 29 in the Kohima sector.
A black spot is a specific area where road accidents occur frequently.
As per the Ministry, a road accident black spot is a stretch of National Highway of about 500m in length in which either 5 road accidents (in all three years put together involving fatalities/grievous injuries) took place during the last 3 calendar years or 10 fatalities (in all three years put together) took place during the last 3 calendar years.
The Transport Research Wing of Ministry over the last year has identified 5,583 black spots for 2018 across India based on the information received from States, the report said.
Out of this, there were 17 black spots in Nagaland.
Top-10 black spots in the state, mostly in Kohima sector, published in the report informed that there were a total of 171 road accidents on those spots from 2016-2018, resulting in 5 fatalities.
According to the Ministry, Black spots may occur due to variety of reasons, such as “a sharp drop or corner in a straight road, so oncoming traffic is concealed, a hidden junction on a fast road, poor or concealed warning signs at a cross-road.”
While a complete list of Black Spots in 2018 will be posted soon on the MoRTH portal, due to limits of space, the report listed top ten black spots, State-wise identified on the basis of the extent of fatalities.
The list of top ten black spots has been given to enable prioritised attention on the same, the report said.
