Kohima, September 12 (MExN): The Naga Student’ Union Chennai (NSUC) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Nagaland for constructing a Nagaland House in Chennai.
The memorandum was submitted through the Minister for Housing and Mechanical, Tongpang Ozukum when the NSUC members meet him on September 11, informed the union in a press release.
During the meeting the NSUC highlighted to the minister that while Chennai offers excellent opportunities on many areas, Nagas are not able to avail same.
Apart from being the medical capital of India, Chennai is also one of the biggest educational, economic and cultural centres in South India, the union said.
The city and the region around is home to many best Universities in India, world-class multi-special Hospitals, and one of the leading Information Technologies hubs in India while more than one-third of India’s automobile Industries are based in Chennai, it added.
However, it expressed concern that as more than 60% of the Nagas engaged in agriculture for living, most cannot afford to send their children to study or to come and avail good medical facilities in Chennai.
In addition, while the unemployment rate among the Nagas is very high, those coming Chennai for further studies, medical treatment and in search of job faced untold hardship for the lack of a proper place to stay, it said. Even if found they find one, there is question of affordability, it added.
In this connection, the union urged the government to construct Nagaland House in Chennai for the “upliftment, benefit and upward mobility of the Nagas who come to Chennai for studies, medical treatment, in search of job and other cost-effective activities.”
The NSUC is confident with the Government of Nagaland that the construction of Nagaland House will become reality in near future and it will benefit the Nagas, stated the release issued by NSUC President N Chibenthung Lotha.
