“We (journalists) are a burdened group of people, as we have so much to give to the society,” said a senior journalist in Nagaland. ‘Journalists are the eyes and ears of the people which call for the journalists to have a seriousness of their profession,’ said Kopelo Krome, a founding member and also advisor of Kohima Press Club (KPC).

Speaking on the 22nd Foundation Day of KPC on January 20 at LCS Building, Kohima, Krome narrated how the club was formed with a handful of journalists. As the club has grown to more than 60 members today, from 20 members during the formation of the club, Krome said, “The growth of the club is not just a blessing to the media, but to the society as we are the voice of the people.”

“We started modestly, never expecting much, but the society expect much from us,” said Krome and urged the fraternity to be serious of what they are, and give its best to the society in their own ways.

KPC President, Alice Yhoshü thanked the pioneers and former leaders of the Club for their deep and genuine concern for the welfare of the press fraternity in the state Capital.

“Today, we are proud to be the oldest Press Club in Nagaland” said Yhoshü.

Nonetheless, she also reminded that as media professionals, “we will continue to face various issues, particularly from those who are intolerant to expression of views that are different from their own. How we measure up to such challenges largely depends on how we, as responsible journalists, uphold truth and justice without bias.”

With the upcoming state assembly elections where the integrity of journalists are put to test, she reminded the journalists to recommit themselves to uphold journalistic ethics, and continue to remain steadfast in the dignified objectives of truth and information as a responsibility and service to the people and society.

Loreni Tsanglao who chaired the programme also urged the members to rededicate themselves to the profession by following the ethics of journalism and be a true mediator between the people and the government.
