The proposed indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland called by the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) began today at 8 am with the establishment of blockade points at several locations.

Four blockade points established were Silonijan, Hanjanglangso Surihajan, Dillai police point and Manja.

No untoward incident was reported, and the blockade was peaceful till evening, a KSA executive informed The Morung Express on Tuesday.

According to KSA, the blockade has been imposed in protest against  alleged unabated illegal encroachment of land in Karbi Anglong district by ‘Naga miscreants’ and the failure of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Assam government to protect their land.

On Monday, KSA President Simeon Rongphar reiterated that the blockade is not against the Nagas but a call for the Assam and Nagaland Governments to hold proper talks on the border issue.

So far, the association has not received any feelers from either governments, he added.

The association further indicated that it is ready to call off the blockade if there is a positive overture from the government.

In view of the impeding blockade, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Limawabang Jamir on November 16 also advised all commuters travelling from Mokokchung to different parts of the state to avoid travelling via Assam.
