
State’s first multi-stakeholder workshop on ‘mainstreaming children with learning disabilities’ on November 2
Kohima, October 31 (MExN): SCERT- Nagaland will be hosting the state’s first multi-stakeholder workshop on ‘mainstreaming children with learning disabilities’ on November 2 at SIEMAT Hall, SCERT, Kohima.
“It is estimated that learning disabilities afflict almost 1 in 5 school-going children. As a result, the Government of India recognizes various disabilities and has made a number of provisions for mainstreaming of these students into regular schools. However, Nagaland lags behind in its ability to support students with learning disabilities and integrate them into the educational system of the state,” stated a press release received here.
Bringing together heads of schools, special educators, policy makers, teachers, parents and government representatives for the first time, SCERT Nagaland (supported by the Department of School Education, Government of Nagaland) is organizing a pioneering one day workshop on “Mainstreaming Children with Learning Disabilities”.
Leading resources persons from across the country will address the needs of children with learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and autism) through discussion on topics ranging from understanding learning disabilities; identification, assessment and certification of students; providing early intervention for struggling students; and updation of syllabus and pedagogy.
Dr. Anupam Ahuja, Head DEGSN NCERT, New Delhi will discuss “Policy on Special Education and Curriculum.” Rama Tandon, Founder, Centre for Dyslexia, New Delhi will talk about “Demystifying Intellectual Disabilities”, providing hands on tools for teachers and parents. Dr. Niharika Nigam, Head-Standard and Quality Assurance, Skill Council for persons with Disability, Government of India, will discuss vocational training and skill development opportunities for students with disabilities. Dr. Sheffali Gulati, Pediatric Neurology, AIIMS-Delhi will present on assessment & certification of students (via Skype). Balendu Sharma, Office of Group Director, Government Affairs & Public Policy-Microsoft India, New Delhi will present on and give demonstrations on technological solutions available to assist students with learning disabilities. It may be mentioned here that Toshi Wungtung, Advisor SCERT, I&PR and Village Guards will be the chief guest, Temjen Toy, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, GoN will give the opening keynote, and Menukhol John, Principal Secretary to the GoN, SCERT and School Education will give the closing remark.
