Kohima, September 7 (MExN): The Nagaland RMSA Teachers’ Association–2016 on Sunday announced that its members will begin an indefinite sit-in protest from September 8 at the Directorate of School Education, Kohima, demanding justice and accountability from the State Government.
The decision follows what the teachers termed the “continued silence and inaction” of the Government of Nagaland in addressing their long-pending service benefits and dues, despite the matter having been legally resolved by the Supreme Court of India, the Association said in a statement.
Altogether, 367 teachers have resolved to launch a “full-face indefinite sit-in protest” beginning September 8, the Association informed, adding that it was compelled to take this step after exhausting all “democratic and peaceful avenues” to resolve the issue.
“This peaceful demonstraion will continue without interruption until our demands are acknowledged and addressed by the concerned authorities,” it added.
However, it clarified that the protest will be conducted as a peaceful and non-violent demonstration in accordance with the directives of the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima.
The Government’s refusal to implement the following demands constitutes not only a violation of legal mandates but also a grave affront to justice and human dignity, the Association stated.
Appealing for wider support, it called upon civil society organisations, student unions, workers’ associations and the general public to stand in solidarity with the teachers in asserting their constitutional right to peaceful protest.
